Roof load limits are a.part of off road touring. I like keeping weights down too but at times expedition vehicles require it. As for Wrangler they can wrangle a.wet pack and a cheese sandwich in the back if you have 4 adults in the car. Their payload is a joke. Cheers

Blackrange the new Deefer will be good but it won't be all things to all people. I am excited to see what they bring out but I just don't accept car company mumbo jumbo on face value. Cheers

I’ll certainly be very surprised if the new Defender is rated to carry a Tonne payload.

‘Most capable ever’? ...sounds good as a one liner, very subjective. ‘Dual purpose’? could mean anything. ...Soccer practice and lunch at Flemington perhaps?

Just because they say it, doesn’t mean it’s true.

Agreed mate, JLR know that the new defender wont be for everyone and have said as much, however it will no doubt be for more people then current defender.

They are pretty upfront and honest about it, some current defender or series die hards will stay as such, others won't plus they are looking to attract a new gen of buyers, to make it a sustainable business case vehicle

McGovern said the Defender will retain the original’s rugged off-road abilities, but he conceded the car’s modernised exterior design won’t be dictated by the ageless appeal of its predecessor that recently ceased production and changed little in its 69 years on-sale.

“I do think it needs to acknowledge the great heritage of Defender in terms of its capabilities, durability and is robustness but not necessarily in terms of its visual quality,” he said.

“I think you have to be careful. I don’t think we should be doing a pastiche of what we have been doing before. What we have to do with the new Defender… it will be quite polarising to the Discovery and Range Rover.

“If [the loyalists] are expecting a facsimile of the old one with all this new technology then I don’t think they’ll be pleased.”

Agreed, but i don't think we hear of any D4, D5, RRV or RRS owners complaining about roof load limits when setting the roof up with gear for offroad touring, key is alloy rack and only light gear on the roof, keep COG low. I dont forsee the load rating of the new defender being an issue, prob be anywhere from 100-150 somewhere, either way should be fine.

i hope so, but looking at what we’ve seen so far, I doubt it...unless they actually are using D4 shells as decoys. Which is entirely possible.

You may get a shock then when the new defender is released.

The 2019 3L Petrol Disco 5 (7seats) has an impressive 907kg payload.(remove both rear seats and your around 1000kg.

2015 Defender has an equally impressive 1012kg payload.

Either payload can more than cater for any normal 4x4, off-road touring or general work loads wouldn't you say?

Also with the airbags it would also be able to carry such loads in a much safer way.

Considering the above and that the new defender will have less seats than the disco and more rugged, would you agree it could easily have a 1 toone payload?

Its 100% made to look like a d4, the bonnet underneath is a very different shape.

Here's some comments from the autoexpress uk article on the nurburgring shots:

"While it’s clear that design cues from the modern Land Rover and Range Rover models will make their way onto the off-roader, there are other details that will clearly mark the car out as a true Land Rover Defender. The headlights, for example, seem to feature a clear round headlamp with small indicator bulbs to the side - albeit fared into the main unit unlike the classic Defender.

Likewise around the back, the taillights appear to be designed in a similar way to those of the car that the new Defender will replace. The sides taper towards the roof while a side-hinged tailgate gives access to the luggage bay.

The four-door test car has a large completely flat bonnet covered by heavy cladding, with a slim grille below. The familiar Land Rover vents are visible behind the front wheel-arches and the windows are set back from the boxy shoulder line, which suggests more substantial cladding on the doors.

Few updates and links from latest articles.

Thought it would be easier to keep all the quotes and info from JLR (and assumptions based on these) regarding the new defender in one place so we can keep updating easily. If you want a quote or info added or even think something should be removed, pm me or say so.

Will keep updating this when time permits.

    ENGINES

Jaguar Land Rover insists the Defender will need a "balanced engine portfolio" in order to succeed in all global markets.

JLR has also said it will launch a three-cylinder Ingenium engine that will be used in a future plug-in hybrid version of the Range Rover Evoque compact SUV. JLR is also expected to announce a diesel straight-six Ingenium engine to replace a Ford-sourced V-6 unit.

JLR currently buys V-6 and V-8 gasoline engines from Ford’s Bridgend plant but has said it will end the agreement in 2020. Ford has no other customers for the engines and has said it will cut jobs at the factory as it concentrates on its own four-cylinder engines at the plant. JLR will stop purchasing V-6 diesel engines this year from Ford’s engine plant in Dagenham, London.

JLR are on record as saying all of their models will be electrified by 2020, and also that MLA is the platform that will be phased in from around this time, so it is logical to assume that the new defender will be on the MLA platform which will have mild hybrid hybrid and fully electric options.

Multiple exhausts, twin one side exit and dual left and right seperate exits.

    BODY STYLES

JLR have released the general outline of the new defender as part of a investor presentation

"The Defender has up to ten different body styles from soft top to Utility Wagon to Double Cab Pick Up allowing you to ride around Delray Beach in the Defender that’s best for you and your driving needs."

2020 Land Rover Defender: What We Know | Land Rover Palm Beach

Land Rover's chief marketing officer Felix Bräutigam told Auto Express: "One of the exciting things for us is that we are not launching a car, we are launching a family of cars."

design boss Gerry McGovern has hinted that a performance SVR version of the forthcoming 4x4 could also be on the cards. Such a car would be developed by Jaguar Land Rover’s newly formed Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, and would allow the brand to tap into demand in Russia and China for powerful and luxurious rugged off-roaders, currently dominated by the Mercedes-AMG G 63.

It's also likely that a hardcore Defender SVX will join the range at some stage and we could even see a luxurious SVA version in line with the Range Rover SVAutobiography.

    Rear wheel carier.

    Full side swinging rear door

    Round head lights.

Left and right defender style vents

Full panoramic glass roof option (as seen on nurburgring tester)

    Boxy body style

    INTERIOR

JLR are on record saying that the leaked images are older pre-production photos however by saying this it is logical to assume that the general layout and seating will be very similar.

Latest tech, info screen, digital binacle, multifunction steering wheel

    Middle seat.

    SUSPENSION

As can be seen on the pilots will have long travel air bag suspension with a coil version option.. one of the original Range Rover Sport mules was spotted with coils.

    CAPABILITY

Departure (50deg) ramp over and approach (45deg) angles can be ascertained from the new Defender photos.

As part of an investor presentation they showed that the defender will be durable, practical, functional and have offroad expertise.

JLR executive Dr Ralf Speth told Carbuyer that the design and engineering of the new model is all but finalised, and promised that the new model will be “even more capable” than the previous Defender when the terrain gets challenging.

Clearly confident as to the new Defender's abilities, he went on to reveal: “I have driven test mules already… and also tried the car against competitors, in on and off-road environments. It’s sensational.”

    RELEASE DATE

JLR are on record saying released 2019, available 2020, refundable preorders now.

    GENERAL JLR ON RECORD COMMENTS

The Land Rover Lineup: Land Rover will have three branches to their model lineup: the luxury Range Rover branch, the versatile Discovery branch, and the Defender branch, which aims to offer the “world’s most capable off-road vehicles.”

2019 Chicago Auto Show Recap | The Largest Auto Show in North America

Speaking from the 2018 Paris Motor Show, Jaguar Land Rover's chief marketing officer Felix Bräutigam said: "The new Defender will not simply be a copy-cat, something retro. It will be something that moves the game on for Land Rover."

JLR executive Dr Ralf Speth informed us that early development mules were undergoing testing by bosses back in 2017.

Rather excitingly, the JLR boss assured us that the new car will be “even more capable” than the outgoing Defender when the terrain gets challenging.

Teasing further, he said: “I have driven test mules already… and also tried the car against competitors, in on and off-road environments. It’s sensational.” He would not put a timeframe on when the new Land Rover Defender would debut but he did say: “It is coming. We are working an authentic successor of the predecessor.”

Found a very interesting pic in this link

First time I believe we have seen how extensive and thick the padding is around the bonnet, front guards, doors, rear panels etc. Looks to be 2-3inches in places.

    Its truly a remarkable disguise!
