For Serious touring/towing and off road capabillity it is pretty hard to beat a 79 series Landcruiser and the old defenders cannot match it for towing performance and payload (the 79 series is 1220kg) and at a bit over 900kg the new defender won't match it either.
Yes we all Love the defenders/series Landrovers But they can't match the Toyota offerings in the value for money and performance/reliability stakes at the moment So JLR will Have to pull something out of the hat with the new defender to convince people to buy the new defender instead of the Toyota/Nissan and Ford offerings.
It Will be interesting to see what actually hits the showroom floors But I am not holding my breath in anticipation.

Lets hope parts are readily available when outback, not like the toyota. i had a mate lose a water pump in his Defender outside Charleville. MR Autos flew one out the next day, he went into the toyota stealership to borrow/hire some extra tools, they had a 200 series that had been there for two weeks waiting on a water pump.

I had a new alternator fitted in my 79 series in Kununurra and it took 2 days for the part to arrive.
Virtually ANY part I need for my D2a can be sourced and fitted at Whyatts in Gerro in a couple of days as well.
Its Not the scarceness of the parts that causes the delays its the Quality of the service that determines this

Exactly.

MR auto are excellent,and,probably the best around at shipping LR parts all over the country quickly.
They have the majority of common parts for most models in stock which helps.

Parts won’t be readily available through Land Rover in remote areas, especially as they have virtually no service agents outside of cities. ...it will be all on the excellent indies as mentioned above to provide this service. And that’s if you can fix it yourself or you happen to find a decent mechanic out there who is happy to work on Land Rovers. I’d suggest the tech in the new Defender will make that rather difficult in remote areas. ...A flatbed to the nearest city will be a very common outcome.

79 is great for getting lots of gear to a worksite dont get me wrong and can be a good touring 4x4 aswell if set up right and issues adressed

Have you seen a 79series with anything over a few hundred kg in the tray try to go up a rutted hill? "Reach for the sky" comes to mind.

Most of the canopys people add the the dual cabs more than likely takes up most of the payload and its a commonly known fact it makes them very unstable and tippy on hills.

They spend more time with 3 wheels on the ground than 4, the payload over and behind rear axle acts as a pendulum, at least half of the tray is behind the rear axle.

Notice where the rear wheel is on the new defender, payload will be mostly infront of axle.

Disco5 is 900 to 1000kg depending if you need 2 rear most seats or not.

Nobody knows what the defender will be, but my guess is at least 1toone for the 110wagon due to not having rear seats.

I think the below is fair when we talk about Defender vs 79series, you can't just say a defender is better than a 79series or a 79series is better than a defender.

79 series dual cab vs 2015, 130 dual cab

79 cab chassis vs 2015, defender cab chassis.

79 series wagon vs 2015, defender 110 wagon.

Comparing these with a 79 series ute is like comparing chalk with cheese, the above are Recreational vehicles and the 79 series is a Work vehicle.
Putting a ton of gear in the back and towing 3.5t would shorten the lifespan of these vehicles But a 79 series would do this with complete ease for years.
That's the sort of thing the new Defender Needs to be able to do as there is a Plethora of "Toorack Tractors" out there But Not a great deal of choice for a Tough hard working 4WD ute nowadays.
I will be disappointed if the new Defender is just another flash looking 4WD with a Mini tray on it, JLR Need to go back to producing AFORDABLE No nonsense 4WD's for the masses that can carry a ton and pull trees down if it had to.
