Not really, the new Defender,by most reports, and we are only guessing, is a totally different class of vehicle, completely different to the Defender as we know it.It should actually be named something else, but LR will stick to the name for marketing.
The Discovery has gone from a family touring wagon,D1, to an upper class around town vehicle(D5) with off road ability, virtually a re badged RR.
The LC200,is still a family touring wagon, and always has been over the years,it is still in a similar class to what it was 30 yrs ago.
The number of accessories available for the D5,compared with an LC speaks for itself, and substantiates what i have just written.
Anyway,just my 2 cents worth[thumbsupbig]
In context we are talking about keeping the name, something of which is the designers call not ours at the end of the day:
When D2 changed to D3 it completely changed in just about every way possible yet its still a disco, into some may say a "completely different class of vehicle".yet we still call it a disco now. However at the time people called it everything but a disco rather an abomination to the disco name and eww that back door. History repeated itself with D5, only now people are starting to come around with mods avail.
Defender 2015 changing to Defender 2020 will also change in every way possible and it also has every right to keep its name.
I bring up the LC200 as its had an evolutionary and gradual change to what it is now, garunteed if the 60 went straight to 200 it would be end of the world scenario for cruiser fans, kinda like some here with defender moving into 21st century.
D5 and LC200 are every bit as luxury as eachother and complicated however the D5 is reportedly more capable in many ways both around town and offroad, However there is for sure more regional dealers for the cruiser. Having said that this is about name not which brand is better.
Aftermarket is catching up, most things are now avail off the shelf for D5 and its only been out since 2017, 2 years!
Roofrack, sliders, wheels, lifts from 1-6inches, winch, bullbar.
LC200 out since 2008 that's 11 years with a 9 year headstart, so to be fair the aftermarket thing doesn't speak volumes imo.
On new defender re changing class, i tend to agree, its creating a whole new class, and so did the D3.
I think I read somewhere on the internet JLR were looking at the Australian version being called the “Series 4 Defender” just to wind up AULRO forum members. [emoji12]
Seriously, JLR own it and will call it what ever they think will help the brand and help it sell better.
Buckle in,its guna be a big day on new defender news! [emoji41]

Land Rover Defender: new pictures of 2019 model released
"Having racked up 745,000 miles of testing already, Land Rover says it has no plans to wind down the development programme just yet.
Defenders will next be deployed to Kenya, where they’ll assist the Tusk Trust’s operations at the Borana Conservancy nature reserve, towing heavy loads, wading through rivers and carrying supplies across unforgiving terrain in a series of real-world trials at the 14,000-hectare reserve."https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...15b3b310b0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3c2c50da0c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c36a3a6493.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e71f797d91.jpg

And here is the big one, still under semi camo as seen on roof and bonnet but wow that looks hot! [emoji7]
Bonnet bulge, insane angles, rwc, sloping roof, bulging guards, blacked out lights, full glass rear.
Pretty happy guys, was worried it was guna look weird after all those random remders where getting around.
Interesting angle choice for photohttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3fc13d09e2.jpg

I can write the comments now to save everyone the trouble.
That’s the new new Discovery 5 not a Defender.
There is no way that is a work or farm vehicle.
Just another bland SUV.
What a piece of crap.
Landrover has completely lost the plot.
Nobody will make accessories for that thing.
It looks like a cross between a D4, Rangerover and a 200 series so it could be alright But any company that fits those stupid super low profile tyres to their 4WD's is aiming at the Yuppy "Pretender" urban 4WD market and it isn't serious about producing a True off road tourer or a workhorse.
No thanks Guys I think that I will stick to my 79 series ute and my D2a for my off road and beach work because they don't pretend to be anything other than tough, highly capable and reliable off roaders and they are definitely Not "Show ponies" fitted with poncy racing wheels and tyres[thumbsupbig]
