Yeah, I really wasn't trying to draw a parallel between this bloke driving an ex cop car around these easy sections and what the Defo can obviously do. That'd be like comparing a typical farm track with King of the Hammers... Serves me right for just chucking them in without explanation. Great links though. Thanks, BR
*Flamesuit on* For the record (again) I expect the new Defo to redefine what a factory stock vehicle can do, easily and comfortably. And with some relatively minor customisation I expect it to make a mockery of most difficult terrain. Unlike so many here I will not compare it with the original as it's a very different vehicle, except with regards to it being the "capable" underpinning to the brand, and that remains the segment it fills for LR. Capable (in this case) meaning it can go places that other vehicles struggle to. Not including reliability or other noise that is hard to define at this time. Just talking what it can do off the showroom floor (with a decent set of tyres fitted). It just is not a basic, rugged, uncomfortable, leaky, noisy, emotive, wonderful piece of history. It's a new chapter and time will tell if it can generate the sheer character and emotion of the original, that admittedly was created over 70 years and not born with. Hard act to follow... Let's see how the young pup gets on...
P.S. I don't own a Defo or Series (yet... :P). However I have spent lots of time in a couple of modernish 110s (HCPU and SW) and have helped mates rebuild various Series and Countys so I reckon I can claim to "get it". And yes, the bloody things got under my skin despite me trying to resist and be rational and sensible. Marvellous things.

    Yes BR track width
    And yes based on comparisons

I would call the Merc a mid size
The LR2020 is not that much bigger

The rear overhang is tiny = mid size

I’ve gone back over all the pix in this thread
Nothing gives me the impression that the LR2020 will be full size aka 200 or Patrol?

If they are using a MLA platform with full EV lithium variant in mind, it will be a very wide boy!

A flat floor battery for 400+km range will need a lot of width between the wheels.

Ok so we are specifically talking about the new Defender and does it have a wide stance.

Heres some pics to review, many from this thread, its not the first time its been discussed.

Note also window line to edge of flare and tyre side and also where centre of tyre runs.

Compare also against current defenders stance and bowler

New defender imo is much closer to bowlers stance/track than outgoing defender.

Remember also JLR are in business with Bowler.

On another subject ,Is the new defender as long as a LC200 or NP, i hope not.

Is it as wide or wider? Being 3 seats in the front plus almost half the tyres outside of window line, highly likely.

Anyway all i was saying is i like the new defenders wide stance, stand by that. Happy to be shown facts to the contrary, until then Won’t be retro...Won’t be retro...

Must say I agree , look at the pic with the spare wheel in the middle of the rear door, then just imagine a dual rear wheel carrier. Be a struggle to keep it within the width of the car.

I see LC200 just about every day with Dual rear wheel carriers and looking at the pic of the pretender , I must say it looks more mid size to me. I just cant imagine it with a dual wheel carrier , but I did make 1 for my D2 so it could fit .

    Cheers Ean

In context we are talking about track width

Look at where the wheel arches/wheels go to (orange)

I would say 2 would fit even without going into arch area. Looking at tusk body edge looks very similar next to lights.

Could almost fit 2.5 32 inch tyres across there couldn't you?

Also 3 adults abreast in front easy (orange)

Imo will be a little shorter, for better ramp, departure, but will make up for it in width and height + square loadspace area for space and hopefully lack of anything in the back.

I think that your eyes might be deceiving you. One of the things about the LC200 is that it has bulging bodywork that may make it look larger, whilst the Defender pilots are slab-sided.

The new Defender appears to be D4 sized, and the D4 is actually nominally wider than an LC200, so here's dual wheel carriers on a D4.

    http://www.kaymar.com.au/pdf/Discove...%20release.pdf

The new Defender appears to be at least as wide as the G-Wagen - would you call that mid-sized?

Either way, the new D4 is clearly wider than the old Defender - because the drivers' elbows are inside the car, and there's a big gap between the driver and front passenger.

Edit: LOL, "new D4" was clearly a Freudian slip ...
