I think a lot.of utes run 17's. Lots of utes about. And 17's for 200 series etc.
Toyota, who.seem to know a bit about things, Do 17's for the GX/GXL 200 series - 285/65R17 tyres. The VX and Sahara have 285/60R18. So worst they do (offroading wise) is a very high sidewall on an 18. LR should offer 18's on their air suspended models of.new.Defender unless they want to.see otherwise likely buyers go.elsewhere.

Sure some will say just go aftermarket,oversize,lifts,etc,but many won’t want to do this.
A vehicle sold as an off road vehicle should have at least an option of rim sizes for off road high load rated LT tyres.

I cant see a prob with new defender profile options if leak is real.
BL LR is never ahead of the game with tyres. It has for many years insisted on low profile and overall small diameter wheels (ie rim and tyre combos) which makes for a small off-road footprint for the weight of vehicle and inability to air down without pinching issues. D5 wears very narrow rubber and low OD for harsh off-road conditions.Quote:

Back in 2016 we were having a chat with the Bridgestone guy in Kununurra and he said the most common tyre was a 18" which was on all the utes in the new utes and they had plenty in stock. Same result in Broome talking to the guys there as well.
Having now been on 18" D697 and now KO2's since 2014 and never had an issue towing a 2.5T off road camper around the outback et al I really don't think an 18" tyre will be an issue for many who are more into adventure based touring rather than hard core offloading.

Landrover is not a tyre company [emoji6], they are creating the demand for different sizes, the tyre companies are now coming to the party and it looks like even more so with what has been spotted on the new defender (to be released if not already)
Lower and medium profile is not for fun, its for safety at high speeds.
For me it will be finding that perfect balance.
Im thinking:
18 inch wheels with 33s or 34s should be safe on the freeway and more that enough sidewall profile for anything we can throw at it.
I went from 18" to 16" for the ability to air down and a greater choice of tyre, the cost benefit is a bonus too.
If you want a vehicle that can travel at a velocity that requires a profile lower than 70%, then buy a car dedicated to that type of travel. A four wheel drive is a compromise, low profile tyres are a specialised component, out of step with the all purpose nature of off road capable vehicles.
