Given all the most recent R & D JLR has done on alloy mono chassis, it makes sense to use that as a design rather than go back to a comparatively heavy steel ladder chassis. Same applies to front and rear IS design, and traction systems.
They did something similar when they applied the early Range Rover chassis/suspension and permanent 4WD developments to stage 1, 90/110/130, discovery 1 & 2.
Lots of people didn’t like Leyland moving away from leaf springs to coils. But developments like the classic Range Rover and discovery 1 & 2 attracted a heap of new buyers who would have never bought a series vehicle.
JLR know most 4wd buyers would never a classic Defender. I’m sure they need the new Defender to have a much broader appeal without taking too many customers away from their other products. Customers who want more of a workhorse will migrate to other brands like Toyota 70 series.

100%..current shape wouldn't come close to passing safety, prob not even 1 or 2 star these days, main issues are rollover, occupant and pedestrian safety. Full redesign needed.

Shape also needed to be efficient for fuel use and emissions. Full redesign needed.
Not bashing old defenders, I have lots of the same issues with my classic RRC, its just reality.
Imo what they have given us based on what we have seen so far is a pretty good scenario all things considered, maybe even best case scenario.
Kept the soul of the icon as much as possible (more is to be seen), fixed everything that needed fixing and improved in nearly every way.
Lighter, stronger, safer, more comfortable, more capable, more drivable, more powerfull, more efficient.
Time will tell if its more durable and reliable?
Agree with most, however an airbaged 110 or cab chassis or 130 dual cab would make for very good competition, and the 70 series is living on borrowed time on the world stage and is not sold in many markets. New defender: No mods needed, add a tow hitch and away you go, dead level towing and comfortable. Time will tell if it will be utilitarian enough, but interior front looks very promising.
Workhorse is a word that means different things to different people/ trades.
Fair few governments around the world are now using the D5 as a "workhorse".

BR you mention the LR2020 is going to be lighter and more efficient than a Defender
A 110 was over 200kg lighter than a D5 and had a load capacity of 250kg more
You think the new LR2020 will be lighter than a D5? I would have guessed with all the extra jiggery, it will be heavier than a D5 (5 seater) which is 2185kg or so ??
And more efficient? Surely that remains to be seen, can’t see any of the engine options getting real world 10 per hundreds but maybe ? Of course the extra gazillion kw are there so they get used.
Until they release an actual Ute it isn’t even in the running as a workhorse
It is simply just another luxo SUV same as all the other LR offerings.

Found on Reddit. Don't know anymore than that.
Micksta don't tell me you haven't read all four and a half thousand posts? The pic was posted up and debated and photoshoped above if you are keen. Cheers
Bit blurry, but shows the angle of roof pretty good.
