There is a dinstintion though. Diesel is unregulated. It is illegal to carry fuel on the back of my van - RVeeThereYet
. I have put petrol on the roof but never on the rear bar. I have had several people hit my D2 from behind. Would hate to think about consequences with 20 plus litres of petrol there, vulnerable. Not a problem with diesel, as you are hard pressed making it burn when you try hard.
Cheers
Yes was referring to the article, back of carravan is not 4x4 though which I think is the question.
Looks like rear bar is legal as long as ADR designed etc, maybe if custom would need engineer cert.

This discussion reminds me of the time many years ago when a cousin of mine on holidays turned up at my sister's place (next door to here), husband and four kids, from memory in a falcon. Since he worked at an oil refinery, and got cheap petrol, he had no intention of paying inflated rural prices for fuel - the roofrack carried six four gallon drums of petrol.

Haha. As a society we have definitely become more risk adverse.
I love petrol motors versus diesel for a variety of reasons but there is no denying that off-road they typically use less fuel and you can safely carry external supplies.
Petrol motors are funny beasts. With a full load i get 14 l per 100k on the highway inuding hilly areas. Stick a 750kg tow load and that only drops by about 0.5 liters per 100l. 4.6 v8 so the extra load doesnt mean much to it. Around town i average 14.5 to 15. On highway unladen 13.5 to.14. Its uncanny. Offroad it goes up but isnt shocking by any means. Not bad for 20.year tech on a heavy brick with a lot of steelwork and roof rack. If the new engines and extra ratios could not legitimately do at least 35 per cent better for similar weights there would be something wrong. Cheers
All makes sense - but does anyone know what ADR's they are referring to here? - "If they’re mounted on the rear of your car, you must be an approved, ADR compliant holder." I can find plenty of links that say this, but none of them point towards the relevant ADR - one or two have links to the main ADR website, but none to a specific ADR. Only reason I'm so interested is that the new rear bar I'm thinking of for my 101 was going to have jerry can holders on it - wondering if the ADR's are retrospective in this instance...
Edit - have emailed Vicroads to see if they know - not expecting much sense out of them though...
