First of all this thing doesn’t have a tray so it is not even on same market as a 79
Second a 79 DC weighs just under 2200kg- I bet a carton the LR2020 will be heavier than that

Wouldn’t be hard to use less fuel than that thirsty V8 in a 79
But I doubt the LR any flavour 2020 will have 1100kg payload
My guess is the “110” will weigh in at 2250kg with 3000kg GVM

The Discovery SD4 HSE has a 921kg payload and its a luxury vehicle, so I don't see why LR couldn't save a couple of hundred kilos of weight by cutting options to increase the Defender's payload up to match the 79. My 2009 Defender 110 wagon has a payload of 1078 kg while the 110 dual-cab is 1525kg and the 130 has a massive payload of up to 1607kg.

A Toyota 70 Series Troopy Workmate wagon has a GVM of 3300kg and kerb weight of 2255 giving a payload of 1045kg, which is 33kg less than my 110 and up to 562kg less than a 130, depending on suspension.

A Toyota 200 series only has a payload of 610kg, which is woeful. Fill the tank, install a fridge, chuck in water and camping gear, hook up a caravan or camper and that's it, basically - leave the family at home.
Only slightly, some of the late model D5,RRS,RR are around the 2250 to 2350KG mark.
Throw an empty canopy on the 79 and your around 300KG heavier...
As for safety, the new Defender will be way ahead of any 70 series, which is a big plus.
Sure we are talking apples and oranges here, the 110 will be up against the LC200,and its replacement.
Screenshot from ring vid, door bottoms exposed, replaceable abs panels?
Plastic trim. Replaceable at huge cost knowing LR.
Cheers
