Why call it a Defender then if it shares nothing with what made the original great? Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of it inside and out (apart from the grill) and would love to own one, but that will never happen.

Yes, got a quote - for a basic spec with only a few things added, like green paint, it tips the scales at just over $82K on the road - and that’s really with bugger all selected. For most builds I’m sure the average price would be around $100K - too steep for this little black duck and way beyond my means unfortunately. I could have got to mid 60’s I think at a stretch which I was hoping would get me close, but it’s a country mile away...

It’s actually very disappointing to be honest that it’s aimed so far away from where the old one was - I’m sure quite deliberately to stop the great unwashed like me owning one. I too am starting to think they should have called it the Discovery 6 - it shares much more in common both spec, tech and price wise.

Don’t worry, If I saw you pull up in yours I’d be over in a flash to have a chat and look with a large smile on my face and hassle you to take me for a ride in it - I’m always happy for those that can afford LR’s finest, but think they could have done something to keep the price down on a basic specced vehicle, but it’s obvious they don’t want to play there any more.

Not all vehicle updates are evolutions. "All new" is regularly thrown around to suggest the vehicle has been improved everywhere. RRC to P38 to whatever the new ones are called. D1 to D2 (at a stretch) to D3 to D5 is another example.

Everybody all over the world knows what a LandRover or a Defender is, and if they say they're selling a Defender, people think thats cool and go check it out while marvelling at what a wonderful, modern, comfortable and hardcore (because its a Defender!) vehicle they have developed it into. Its interesting and the name tells a story about what the vehicle is and does.

If they call it a Velociraptor (or whatever)... people will just shrug and have NFI what it is, will have no interest in it and they'll move along - Think "Evoke", now think "Range Rover", the names give different impressions.

"Defender" is a marketing and sales drawcard, and like every other vehicles, this is just an "All new" update.

And a 200 series Landcruiser is in the same price and capability bracket. I suspect that the conversion targets for the new Defender are LC200/Lexus LX series, Nissan Patrol, G-wagon/ higher end Jeep crowd who are looking for something different. Globally the farmer/miner/tradie market is already saturated with utes and full size pickups, and much of those sold by fleet departments at a substantial discount. Why would JLR, a relatively small volume manufacturer, want to break into the low margin, high volume commercial market when every car they sell needs to turn a good profit to keep the company viable? As sad as it, in a world flooded with capable, high quality and affordable 4x4s from companies with significant government support JLR needs to find a niche to compete in. Mid to upmarket buyers feeding a second-hand market of enthusiasts wanting capability appears to be that niche.

Then why ask the question? - That’s rhetorical, don’t answer, we know why... 😉

Not sure why you feel a need to try and labour this point here’s some rough numbers...

Expected Aus base model price based on pretty much every motoring website - $70k
Paint, etc - $4K (will be more than that)
    Dealer Charges - $2k
    Stamp Duty - $4K
    Rego - 1K

Oh look - $82K - and I’m being VERY conservative and VERY different to what came before it - still looks more like a Disco when you stack up the numbers. I bet ANY official quote you get will be more than this.

Proof will be in the pudding - I don’t think I’m too far wrong. What does it matter anyway? I’m just having my say, same as you. 👍

You can add a wee bit of LCT to that and another thousand on the dealer delivery charges.

Funnily enough, we could afford one if we raided our savings, but The Navigator's response when I raised the idea was. "In your dreams!", so I guess that's a negative. POLL New defender

Maybe it’s just me but there is much irony in the fact that all new Defenders will have Luxury Car tax applied!!!!
Surely surely surely blind Freddy can see it is Defender in name only if it has gone from utilitarian farm workhorse to Luxo SUV !!!

In any case to truly break into the Aussie market and claim significant new sales they really need a dual cab Ute - and at least a Ute wouldn’t cop LCT...

Oh and to all you but the EU FTA is coming.... keep waiting!
