$80k for a basis model with the piddly little motor - tell em their dreamin.
Drive away price for a basic Prado (GX) is $58K. I agree the LR is a better vehicle but not $22K better.
Tell em they are dreamin.

Very interesting... is New Defender more comparable to Prado or 200 series?
...it makes a big difference to the pricing discussion.
]
I think new car buyer will compare differently, one may compare against 200 but others will compare against something else.
A family of four would probably compare against prado, pajero etc As these will get to nearly every place the defender will get to I.e. as a family or gray nomads in touring mode wanting to see a good portion of Australia. For a family getting bang for the buck maybe a pajero gives them a head start as they have $20k to put towards camper trailer/caravan or fitting out the car.
Gotta keep in mind, all the tech, approach departure ramp over angles, driving up 45 degree slopes, hitting gutter at high speed doesn’t mean this is attractive to everybody. The starting price of $80k automatically makes people slit it into a certain range of competitors.
We are in a Land Rover forum so off course there are rivet counters that will argue and push there point every inch.
I don’t reckon there will be swags of punters or family jumping ship just because Land Rover day the defender is the be all of off roaders. I reckon the defender will get good sails from existing or previous Land Rover owners.
I asked around work the other day and most weren’t even aware of that the new defender has been released. I see Land Rover sponsor the rugby World Cup, I haven’t watch much but I don’t recall seeing any defender adds. I suggested maybe having a look online, they didn’t seem interested.
Either way I’m not in the market for a new car as the current ride is set up to drive around the world, switching to the new defender would be throwing a lot of money at a car I cannot modify to suit my needs and staying with the current would equate to two years overlandig money.
Actually in your post you made 2 individual points.
Point 1, 80k for base model with a little motor.
Point 2, compared to the price in point 1, you can get a base Prado for 58k thats 22k less.
My response to point 1 was that compared to the old defender, even though its a small motor its a significant step up.
...Previous Defender...
2.2L single Turbo diesel
Power: 90kw
Economy: 11L/100
Torque: 360NM
0-100 time: 15.8seconds(approx)
Max speed: 145kph
Fuel Tank:75L
Weight: 2014kg
Approx range: 680km
...New Defender...
2.0L twin turbo diesel
Power: 147kw
Economy: 9L/100(approx)
Torque:430nm torque
0-100 time:10.3 seconds
Max speed:175kph
Fuel tank: 85L
Weight: 2323kg
Approx range: 944km
The facts show although its a small literage engine its a significant step up in every area above from the previous defender and respectable numbers at the same time.
Response to Point 2:
Equiv Auto Prado base Driveaway i got was 62k (18k difference)
Hmm, looking at the standard equip on both this is what the defender has over the prado.
Here are just a few of the highlights of the defender over the prado.
The air susp alone is worth the 18k right there imo.
The lack of DPF issues (no having to force burnoff)
Better offroad angles
Android auto/apple carplay
500kg more towing
More power
More torque
Tpms
Offroad tyres
Adaptive dynamics
HDC
Led headlights
Auto headlights
Rain sensing wipers
Two zone climate control
8 way semi powered front seats.
360 surround camera
360 parking
Driver condition monitor
Wade sensing
Lane keep assist
DAB
SOTA
TSA
I will say this the Prado for sure has a better fuel tank and range, one of the best around.
From were im sitting value wise even if the new defender was 25k more it would be fair.
Its all to do with value proposition, some may not care about all the above and think the prado is perfect for them, thats great. Others see the value add in the new defender for the extra 18k and will be happy to pay it.
Both + Gwagon, Patrol, D5, basically any fullsize 4x4 wagon the 110 will compete with.
90 will compete against many more players, imo the 90 will be very popular.
My dealer is confident that LR will do a ute based off the commercial also based on what he has seen internally, but hey we can't confirm that as fact.
Accessory pricing has been released (149 items), as far as my local dealer is concerned you can now accessorize, get full price and order..i will be finalizing this week.
Definitely Prado/Pajero/Jeep etc - like it or not the D5 is the 200 series competition but then some would say that the main competition for the new Defender is the D5 and I would not disagree.
Putting aside its looks, the D5 is better value for money than the new Defender. In the cold hard light of day, what can a new Defender do that a similar spec D5 cannot do - I would suggest nothing.
I believe that the new Defender will simply take sales away from other LR products and if the new Defender has better sales than the D5 then the Discovery name will slowly fade away and disappear from the LR line up.

Yes we can go over the specs with a fine tooth comb and come with arguments in support of the LR product - and I would not disagree afterall I have 5 JLR products sitting on my little suburban block.
However for the average punter out their in great unwashed land the highlight of the Prado is that it is a Toyota and the downside of the Defender is the it is a Landrover, and it costs much more and has a piddly little engine compared to a big ruff tuff Toyota and the perception is the Toyota will tow better. Remember that the small 2 litre Amorak engine was a great engine and did all that was asked of it, but perception was that is was a piddling little engine and VW recognised this and went to the 3 litre V6.
It is not a fair comparison and I dont agree but that is how it will be.
The Defender will take sales from the Discovery and not LRs opposition. The models of the new Defender that people want (mid specs) need to come in at around $70-$80K on the road with top spec around $90k.
