Steel is hardly a problem. You don’t see much rust in 20yr old steel 4wds used for purpose.

Electrolysis gets most Defenders - just look at the numbers with rotted out door frames and bulkheads.
You do I’m places where things rust. Steel bodied vehicles are all completely gone by 20 years. Defenders last much much better.

Honestly in this day age how many of us actually keep a vehicle for 20 years or 500,000kms?

If by crap you mean better constructed, smoother, more powerful, more frugal, safer, more capable, more comfortable then yes, they are crap.

If you mean the rivet counters - who spend significant time restoring and maintaining their vehicle as a hobby then yes - new ones are crap - because they just get on with it and work.

Really?! Plenty of 20+ year old vehicles rolling around here in perfect body condition.

“Defenders” have corrosion issues in under a couple of years in frames, firewall, capping (in Defender derivatives). I’ve seen it in all of them including the ones we own.

It's a shame though. This day and age sees a rapidly growing population in the billions that's throwing their **** away when it gets dull and replacing it with new **** that's shiny cool but essentially serves the same purpose.

If you buy a good car you can keep it for 20 years / 500k, so why not? It should be encouraged.

The real defenders can easily have panels/chassis/engine/transmission repaired or replaced. It's a modular platform that you can maintain and run for life - it would seem.

I am tempted by the new defender (130 hybrid if ever released). But it will be hard to justify. Its twinkling and I want one, but as it stands - I don't need one.

I don't get it I'm sorry. Are you assuming I throw my vehcile in the bin after 5 years? Cause I don't! I sell it to someone who pays a good % less than I did at purchase time.
Have you not upgraded your home at some stage either by moving into a new one or renovating?
Have you not upgraded your phone or are you still using a can and string?
    Have you not upgraded anything?

It's not about wastage as a result of upgrading, as used items sell in the used market.

In the meanwhile I can afford to buy a nice new vehicle every time a lease is up so I simply pass my used vehcile to someone that either does not want or cannot afford to buy new. Simple, recycling really

Justify it however you want. I'm not judging. Just saying, if we all kept cars longer from day one, a **** load less would have been manufactured. Fact. And yes I know how it works in the REAL world. Just a shame is all.

FYI : my smartphone has been replaced almost every year. Sometimes I loose it. But most times it just breaks. They are certainly not built to last.
