Ex 300Tdi Disco:
One of the things that makes me hesitant about moving over to the new Defender is being in the clutches of Jaguar Land Rover for the period of warranty (5 Years?)
Way back I had a three-year free service agreement with my current Defender. Every time it went in for a service I was met by a man in a suit who when questioned about a potential warranty issue would declare that being a "commercial vehicle" these things were to be expected. Furthermore, the Defender came back less new than when I gave it over to them: dents, bent number plate, ripped floor lining.
It was a relief having been freed from the jaws of LRA to establish a respectful relationship with an independent Land Rover specialist: one who greets me in overalls soiled by work and capable of discussion informed by experience (Roving Mechanical). Ten years now and very happy.
Now I'm not a mechanical whizzkid but I have a rough idea about how my Defender is put together and how the bits work. So the prospect of being shackled to JLR seems like a forced and arranged marriage in which I'm the inferior partner.
Of course, nothing will go wrong and I will only have to see them once a year...right?

You don’t need the OEM to service your new vehicle to keep the warranty, they just need to be qualified and use suitable parts. If you’re worried about the word ‘suitable’ then have them use genuine filters when servicing it, there is no come back to that.

Correct, the last two i bought new didnt go to the dealer for a service ever.Went to an Indie.
Only went there for warranty issues...
Which they sort of fixed, half fixed, eventually fixed,if you get the drift....
LR dealers never impressed me in any way.
Yet the work vans go to the local dealer,in 14 yrs, never had one issue, and i am fussy.
My current LR mob will be happy to look after the servicing and I trust them to do it. They can't do any warranty work of course.
So the issues are:
- not getting sucked into a free servicing deal that some dealers offer and
- having to negotiate the rocky path that JLR will want to drive blaming the Independent and therefore not honouring the warranty
