theres really nothing to prep for , the crossing is a doddle , just get in your all singing all dancing defender with enough food and water for 3-4 days depending on how fast you go.

most people do it fast. , just lower the tyre pressures more than you think you should and it's a breeze.

I've been in and out of the Simpson/Birdsville/Big Red a number of times , I wouldn't bother again.....unless I was going with a group that hadn't done it...

I might enjoy doing one with an empty trailer and filling it with the rubbish that the lifted and locked brigade believe they have hidden and left behind.

I don't know really how good the deefer's traction control and driving aids are , maybe you dont even need to air down. Someone try it.

    Too easy!

Sydney to Oodnadatta mostly on tar....2250km.

Oodnadatta to Birdsville from Dalhousie springs...a doddle driven correctly in the right conditions!

So the problem with the "new" Defender is?

I didn't call out a problem , quite the opposite.

I suggested the 663 to do it with any special preparation , and suggested maybe not even a need to air down.

Airing down is always a good option!!

Exactly even if it’s to protect the tracks.

I didn’t watch the full vid,a few minutes were enough for me.

Tyres could be the only issue, depending what they are on that particular vehicle,or any vehicle doing that sort of trip.

Doing a trip through the West MacDonnells I pulled over to let 10psi out of the tyres down to 25. A concerned fellow traveller pulled over to make sure that all was ok. I was on 16" rims. I do wonder about 20" wheels ...I look forward to finding out!

Maybe the 663 suspension setup will negate the need to air down...driving it at 80 km//h on rough roads the old Defender really needed it! (the subsequently installed Bilstein shocks might have made a difference in the equation as well)
