Ok I found the chassis number its 25324688D. Don't know what means but at least I can now register it.
Hi All, I have recently purchased a 68 ex army 109. I love this thing. It has that much patina, and i'm going to leave it just the way it is and drive it.
I have a couple of questions it has some sort of diff lock that is just a big nut that hangs out the drivers side rear axel. Does any one know how these work?
The main problem is I cant find the chassis number!! Obviously I need this to get it registered and drive the pants off it. Could some of you more learned folk please fill me in, on where to locate this vital piece of information??

Ok I found the chassis number its 25324688D. Don't know what means but at least I can now register it.
Chassis number should be on the LH back rear spring haanger, on the side facing bit just above the shackle - as well as on a plate in front of the gear lever, and on a plate on the LH side of the seat box facing the door. The only one the registration authorities will taake any notice of is the one on the chassis itself. Without looking it up, the 'D' suffix indicates about 1968, and reflects the major modifications since Series 2.
The diff lock you describe is actuated by rotating the nut (clockwise, I think, to lock) and simply locks the rear axle differential. Known, but not very common these days.

Thanks for the help John. Yep I found the chassis number under seven layers of paint. I will try the diff lock tomorrow and see how it goes. Ran out of time for pics today, but I did get it registered. Great to drive and not as loud as I thought it would be, seeings as it came with a set of ear muffs over the front seat!!! It has a Nissan 3.3l diesel and 5sp in it so cruises at 100ks ok. Does seem to blow a heap of blue smoke and miss when its cold though. Runs perfect once it gets hot. Not sure if this is the injectors or a very tired motor?? I would like to get this sorted.

Diff lock is probably Mcnamara manual diff lock
It is activated by undoing the bolt in the middle of the big nut .It is spring loaded and will lock in
To disengage it you reinsert bolt to unlock it
Ok you take the bolt out that makes sense. I had a play with it and that's what happened.

I know it looks a bit rough, but it is as solid as. Tiny bit of rust in the A- piller on the drivers side.
