    Ex Army LR help

Your probably gunna laugh but for 24 years i drove these things still remember when they took away our series 3 and gave us the new ones in 90..and cried when they took our 2A 106 gun carriers in 91; however i never knew that they had 2 different engines?
I have been looking at all the ads for the recently retired army rovers and some are 2.5 lt others are 3.9lt? others are 4 speed and some are 5 speed? I only remember 4 speed.
maybe im missing something here...can someone in the know point me in the direction of the best way to go in relation to set up, 2.5 / 3.9 etc, etc.
I loved the old girls and want to buy one, but which one?
    Cheers in advance
    Tim

    Hi Tim

There was a period when the Army bought some Defender TD5s, they are often called "remediation Defenders". The TD5 is a 2.5 litre turbo diesel with 5 speed box, essentially a civvy spec vehicle with modifications to the front dumb irons for the Army bull bar and the lifting capacity.

The Remediation Defenders were either MY2000 or MY2003

If you're going to buy one, the 3.9 Isuzu diesel with the 4 speed box are the ones to get. Almost bullet proof. The remediation vehicles while they perform on road can have reliability issues with the TD5.

Apart from the remediation vehicles as Diana described above, all others, the ones you recall, have 3.9 litre four cylinder diesels with a four speed gearbox and are commonly referred to as Perenties. A few ads have listed Perenties with 5 speed gearboxes and various other anomalies.
The 4x4s are naturally aspirated, the 6x6s are turbocharged.

The 2.5's are TD5 Defenders (5 speed) and they were sold in the first auction (not sure if there's any more coming up) These were the newer one's and went for quite high prices.
The 3.9's like you drove are the older 110 with the Isuzu 4BD1, extremely strong and reliable engine, easy to fit a turbo if you want. Very strong 4 speed gearbox, the army version of the gearbox is stronger than the standard one.
It will be a lot easier and cheaper to pick up a 110 Isuzu than the TD5.
which is the better of the two??
In my opinion the Isuzu is the way to go.

I heard from a mate yesterday that a well known Landy mechanic in Melbourne is doing a lot of power steering conversions on the ex Army 110's because the buyers aren't aware they don't have PAS. The Isuzu has a cover plate where the P/S pump fits (gear driven pump) so it's easy to fit a pump, but I'd imagine it would cost a few $$$ by the time you get a new steering box as well as a pump.

    Cheers, Murray

I heard KLR are charging $1800 for a PAS install.

The TD5 remediation 110s are pretty scarce on the ground, whereas there are thousands of Perenties.

    G'day Stomps and welcome.
Diana and Mark are correct about the other vehicles BUT...
    The main reason for this apparant discrepincy is this;
The main car selling websites utilise pre-filled forms for the vehicles in a drop-down menu style.
They don't have a selection for the military variant so it defaults to the civvy specifications.

Ignore the list info and look at the pics and written description.

    Hope this helps.

Ah hum, someone just woke me up from a loooong sleep!

The Td5 have a reputation of dropping the screw off the oil pump drive and seizing the engine. They are also civilian spec with standard R380 gearboxes no where near the strength of the Army LT95.

when they were sold off about 3 or 4 years ago they sold for about $20K to $35K, I saw one at St Peters this week and I wouldn't have given you $5K for it.
