if you were going to get one that you were gloing to restore or fix up what price range would you be looking at and how far are you willing to go

I'd recommend you got for a Series 2a or 3, preferably a 3. Whilst very slightly more complex, the 3s are slightly safer too, and being newer there will have been less wear and tear, at least theoretically. The Series 1s have a lot of harder to find parts than the later Series.
It'll definitely help if you have a father or grandfather into older cars as the cheaper end of the market generally takes a lot of work to get up to spec.
I bought my 2a whilst on a student budget, a christmas holiday job paid for most of it!

Welcome to the forum as above look at a series 2a or 3 on ebay they range from give away to a very nice exmil which sold last week for $3600 unregistered but not a lot of work to be done good ones if you want to work on them can be had for $1500 so students can afford them a good exmil will turn heads too

Yeah I was going to buy my niehgbour's old Landrover series 1 LWB but he was asking too much.
Im prepared to spend around $7000 on the entire thing.
My neighbour said that if I do get one and have any problems to ask him for help.
The only other issue is fuel economy. Me being a student, I dont have a lot of money to spend on fuel.

Be wary that anything that requires work for rego will *always* cost a lot more than you anticipated. If you think a truck needs $5,000 work, budget for $7,000 and don't be surprised when it costs $10,000.

That said, there is a lot of good series trucks around that are ready to go. If you're on a budget I would buy the best one needing the least work. It may seem like a good idea to grab a $500 basket case and 'just tidy it up' but it's false economy. It will cost more in the end.

$7000 should get you a cracking good one, with plenty of change to keep it that way.

Fuel economy is not too bad from the 2.25 Petrol, better from the less common (and noisier, slower) 2.25 Diesel. Perhaps avoid the 2.6 6 cylinder found in LWB Series IIIs.

My pick would be a 2A SWB with the 2.25 Petrol.

2A SWB are everywhere, so more chance of finding a good one. The 2.25 Petrol is also very common and parts are cheap and easily obtained. Also, the Series II/IIA gearbox is much stronger, and much cheaper/easier to rebuild if it does go kaput. Series III boxes are more likely to give trouble, and are a bit of a nightmare to rebuild apparently (more art than science I'm told)

'68 and onwards brought about a few changes for the better, such as cable operated wipers, stronger gearbox (Suffix C? D? - the cog-boffins will clarify I'm sure) and a few other minor improvements which don't spring to mind at the moment. The later ('70/'71) 2A models with the headlights in the guards ("wide light") as opposed to headlights near the grille ("narrow light") would be the pick of the bunch.

Hi Tom, I'm not a LROC member but thought I should make a few comments.

I went on a similar Odyssey a bit over a year ago, buying my first car and wanted a Series Land Rover.

"Patience is a virtue" rings very true for me. Take your time looking at options, talk to people and be critical of what you are looking at. If you can take an experienced Series-phile, all the better. Wait, and the right one will come up.

Also, do plenty of reading on the Series Pinnacles on here, there is plenty of great information about virtually any Series-related topic.

In terms of fuel economy, it mostly depends on the condition of the motor. A flogged out motor will be thirsty and low on power, but a fresh, well maintained one will be reasonable. My PB so far for a 2.25 petrol is 13l/100km. From what I have read, the 2.6 6 cylinder is more powerful, but will drink considerably more than the 2.25. The 2.25 diesel is more frugal again.

If you have around 7,000 to spend, you should find a pearler, or have enough funds to set one up nicely. I think I got pretty lucky, but haven't spent anywhere near that one mine.
