Not necessarily. But you have to remember that the newest Series Landrover is almost thirty years old, and most a lot older. And any vehicle that age is likely to need a fair bit of work, plus even when new, service intervals were less than they are today, and expected in service repairs more frequent.

But the way to look at it is that with a Series Landrover, you can be your own mechanic (unlike most current vehicles). The factory workshop manuals are designed for the owner and assume a minimum of mechanical knowledge, and few special tools are needed. And being built like a meccano set and high off the ground, you can do virtually anything without the need for a hoist or other expensive equipment.

    i have a project for sale. it's a 1958 command-recon 88"series 2.
needs some rust repaired (not much) and some minor mechanical repairs to get it going.
most panels are straight and i have accumulated lots of spares over the 4 years i've been "going to" restore it, including a reco gearbox and transfer case.
everything must go and i'm about half an hour from hornsby on the northern beaches.

Talk to Brian at Land Vehicle Spares. They are based out in Silverdale and are a grave yard for Landrovers.
They have loads of second hand spares as well as New Old Stock and will be able to help you with all your parts needs.
LVS are also able to help with mechanical advice & upgrades also since they have a fully functioning workshop with licenced mechanics that are only too happy to help.
They are open 5 1/2 days a week and well worth a drive out to see what they've got.
    Give them a call 0247 741 741 monday to friday 8-5, sat 8-3
