    Stockton Beach closing???????????

Over the last few weeks I have heard the same story from 4 totally different sources. The grape vine states that the worimi tribe are pushing to shut Stockton beach completely by the end of this financial year.

Has anyone else heard these rumours deny, confirm or possibly shed so light on the story?

I'm keen for a run up there as well, plus I need to collect a roof rack from Cal415. I hope the rumours are wrong Dobbo, that would be an enormous loss having stockton closed.

    Disscusion on Stockton beach closure
    Dated 04/01/07

Stockton Beach is now known as the "Worimi Conservation Lands". It is to be a co-managment agreement between NP and the Worimi people. The Worimi National Park itself is mainly the vegetated area behind the dunes. There are 2 other areas, namely: the Worimi Reginal Park and the Worimi State Conservation Area.

4WD access is still via Lavis Lane and Gan Gan road at Anna Bay but a lot of the dunes at the back of the beach will soon be out of bounds. It will be possible to drive to the surf and along most of the beach but it is a narrow area that has been alocated. The purpose of the changes is to ensure the natural and cultural values of Stockton Bight are maintained.

Beach permits will be available at the Nelson Bay NP office and most of the usual outlets from the 1st of May 07. Some of the rules for beach use are:
    (Copy of recent press release)
[quote:af5d61cd56]*All vehicles must be RTA registered, including RTA conditional registration for recreational vehicles, motorbikes, dune buggies and quad bikes.
*A valid Worimi Conservation Lands permit must be displayed on all vehicles entering the park.
*All RTA conditional registered vehicles (quad bikes, motorbikes, dune buggies) must remain in the Recreational Vehicle Area.
*A speed limit of 40km per hour applies - 20km per hour within 100 meters of other vehicles, pedestrians and wildife.
*Dogs are permitted on Stockton Beach but must be on a leash at all times.
*Public road rules apply to beach driving .
*Penalties apply for driving in unorthorised areas.
*Vehicles must remain within permitted beach driving areas. Do not drive or park on dunes, headlands or any vegetated area.[/quote]

For more information try the NP web site www.environment.nsw.gov.au.

If users do the right thing in this area and are responsible NP should have no reason to keep us out, so take out what you take in and respect other users. There will be new interative signs posted to ensure users know the new rules and restricted areas
    Cheers Baz.
