Probably abit of sacrilege on here but currently in process of converting the perentie to a hard top and painting her up like the old safari models. loved the canvas but for someone who's constantly carrying a few surfboards and bikes etc, wasn't practical.. also did some research before i started and found alot of people saying it could be done but no concrete evidence.. anyway below are the pictures as she stands and proof it works.
missing the rear door stop which is annoying.. i put it down somewhere and now it has gone walk about and a few small things to work out like seat belt mounts etc etc.
have a power steering pump/box sitting in the garage ready to go in, just waiting on a new drop arm, snorkel to go on and some newer model doors so i can wind the windows down whens stinking hot in wa.
long term i'll be buying a turbo deisel 4bd1 and throwing that in, i have sourced a heat exchanger that i'll plumb up for hot showers after surfs and then she'll be getting a lick of paint...
i have heard that rrfsv's have a higher ratio 4th? is this true but whack one of them in the box if so as i find 4th at 110 abit hard.
anyway feel free to throw some comments down and ask questions aswell..
cheers
yeh 110 even a little quicker would be good as I travel up and down the coast quite abit.. Transfer case is better.. Should be an easier job then gearbox, anyone know what sort of cruising speed they get?
This will be a great looking truck when it's done, what colour will it be?
On the gearing, you won't do any better than what you have now without a mountain of work; basically fitting a 5 speed. As said before, all LT95 main gearbox ratios are the same only the transfer case high range ratio changes. The ratio you have - 0.996:1 - is the tallest there is. RFSVs are a shorter ratio, i.e. they rev higher at 110km/h (if they can even make it there - not sure). There aren't taller diff ratios available either.
Your one easy option is larger diameter tyres, but the change to RPM at 110km/h will be slight.
All this said, I have no issue driving my 4-speed Perentie at 110km/h - which I have done in the 13 hour Sydney to Sunshine Coast haul a couple of times.
