    No.5 wheel studs

    Hi all

Just noticed I've got a broken wheel stud on my No.5 trailer. I can see the stud turning from the rear of the hub. How are these studs normally fitted, are they pressed/punched in from the rear or are they a screw in fit. I haven't tried removing it yet as I thought I'd get some advise first. Are they a standard stud that I could source locally or are they specific to that type of trailer.

    Many thanks

Pretty sure they screw in, quiet common for them to undo when trying to take off the wheel nuts.

You probably won't find them just anywhere, as they are 9/16' BSF thread, which is fairly uncommon these days. But the stud is common with the early Series Land Rovers, so is available from LR parts supply sources, such as E-bay.

Once the hub has had a few stud replacements through it's life, the thread gets a bit loose. Refit the stud with a soft setting Loctite AND stake the back of the hub with a punch.

Are they 9/16" BSF both ends? If so, this is poor design. Should be a fine thread on the end that gets the nut removed regularly and the fixed end should be a coarse thread. In this case 9/16" BSW.

I can supply 9/16" BSF taps but am out of stock of dies. To supply these at a reasonable price I have to get them made in China. I won't be doing this as I am trying to sell the business and fully retire.
