    A question of helmets.

A friend is visiting from Sydney. He says to a friend in Melbourne "Don't wear that helmet in NSW because you will be fined for wearing a helmet that does not conform to standards.
Now, this helmet has a sticker on it that says it conforms to AS1698 - "Protective Helmets for Vehicle Users". It also has a tinted visor that conforms to AS1609 - "Eye Protectors for Motor Cyclists and Racing Car Drivers" as AS1698 certification cannot be given unless the visor conforms to that standard
So, what is so different about the NSW standards that make a hemet that is legal in Qld and Vic but illegal in NSW?
The motorcycle sites are awash with warnings about this anomaly but are rather short on detail.

All I've been able to figure out regarding this is that there are some over zealous Police in NSW who carry on about some symbol not being on the helmet. I'm not sure if anyone has tested this in a Court of Law yet.

The other thing is I've never seen anyone post they have been booked - only 'a mate of a mate got done' - could it just be an urban legend?

If a helmet meets all the required standards then I don't see how people are getting booked.

Tinted visors would be the only questionable component.

Mines pitch black, which with my sight works better for me (years in the sun)... At night I just flip it up and wear my glasses...

    Questionable in what way?
In order to get AS1698 certification, it must conform to AS1609.
In order to conform with AS1609, it must conform with AS1067 - "Sunglasses and fashion spectacles". This standard defines the tinting.
So, if the helmet is certified to AS1698, then the tinting is within standard.

Visors are integral to the helmet are they not? The ones I have seen are.

    Thanks Ron.
John has a helmet with the SAI Global sticker attached.

This appears to be the certification that all the fuss is over.

Are you suggesting the visor needs to have a SAI Global sticker attached as well, even though it is integral to the helmet?

Visor must meet AS 1698, and have visible light of at least 50%..

Helmets are provided with clear visors and optional tinted (and non AS 1698) visors are avail.

All visors on my Shoei(s) are removable and the wife has a clear, tinted and a metalised visor for her Arai..
