I think I've just found it.

AS1609 Clause 3.1.3 Integral Visor.
Integral visors shall be capable of being easily opened. Integral Visors shall not be tinted.

As the integral visor does not conform to AS1609, it therefore does not conform to AS1698.

But, in John's case, his helmet has two integral visors. The main visor is not tinted but the secondary visor is. I can find nothing in relation to the secondary visor, yet.

Might need clarification from the manufacturer and SAI Global.

All visors on my Shoei(s) are removable and the wife has a clear, tinted and a metalised visor for her Arai..

My interpretation of it would be that there is only one Integral Visor going by the below definition....and that is the exterior one which forms 'a single congruous whole' with the helmet. The internal flip down tinted visor would come under 'visor'. So as long as the external visor meets the standard, that would be all that is required. I have two helmets from well known brands, and one cheaper chinese made, that all have the twin shield system, ie...the internal flip down tinted shield...and they all conform to AS1698.

I have a Fibreglass full face Bell helmet that I purchased on the day that Motorcycle helmets became mandatory wearing wearing in NSW. It is currently buried in a pile of stuff in my shed (hard to get to), so would anyone know if this helmet is still legal, Regards Frank.

Apparently a helmet has a 10yr life span with no impact to the helmet in that life span, although I think that has changed, some manufacturers have a 5yr lifespan now, but I think that is only if the helmet has been used in that lifespan, I would also say your old helmet doesn't comply anymore rather than anything else, plus getting new visors would be impossible.

With an impact, it's a new helmet required and by impact if you're wearing it(not if you drop it while carrying it) or it comes of the bike on the highway at speed.

In my opinion Frank and with the techknolegy of new helmets, I'd buy a new one, besides the foam inside the helmet is probably stuffed, the foam and padding in my 15yr old Shoei is.

I've only ever worn Bell or Shoei on the road, I now have the Bell Revolver Evo Ghost Modular helmet, with the drop down inner visor with a slight tint, the tint is not much darker than the clear visor(light smoke) but it cuts glare pretty well, so far I'm happy with it, means you don't have to carry sunglasses.
