Strong fuel smell after startup
Hi all, my girlfriend had a 1995 audi 80 which smells very strongly of fuel shortly after startup. The smell hangs around in the cabin when driving. I don't really know a whole lot about cars so i can't really give her any ideas as to what's going on. The car seems to have less than ideal fuel economy too. If anyone has any clues as to what could be the cause of this problem it would be a huge help.
Thanks. Damo.

If it goes away after the car warms up it is unlikely to be a fuel leak. If the smell is strongest behind the car its just a cold engine not burning all its fuel. It could also be a failed oxy sensor. If the exhaust smell is strong in the cabin look for damaged boot seals letting the smells in. Otherwise take it to a VW mechanic for appraisal. I know one in the NE suburbs of Adelaide who's competent.
