2H Landcruiser engine glow system problems.

    Hi All,

Having trouble with one of the farm landcruisers (again) and was hoping one of the wizards around here might have more of an idea than I do.

The vehicle runs the 2H engine with what I believe is the superglow system. A little while ago the 2nd voltage resistor toasted itself due to what I thought was a faulty insulator. Up until this point in time you would turn the key on after a couple of seconds the glow light would go off and then watching the voltage gauge it would stay quite low for around another 30 seconds before an audible click, voltage back to normal, crank engine, starts no worries.

During this cycle the sensing resistor that connects to the busbar would get quite hot (glow) - I had noticed when we purchased it that it was occasionally shorting to the engine block, increased the gap - no longer an issue.

About 6 weeks ago I noticed that the time between the glow light going off and the secondary relay clicking off was starting to increase, after having a look in the engine bay there was a pretty obvious burnt insulator on the 2nd voltage resistor as well as what looked like a small bit of damage to the busbar. After waiting 3 weeks for all the parts to arrive and then reassembling - new insulators, busbar and 2nd resistor - turned the key to the on position and after a little while the fusible link off the battery started smoking. Disconnected the terminal before any damage could ensue however after taking everything apart again, checking insulators installed correctly, its still happening.

At this point I disconnected the glow plugs and the problem disappeared, after running continuity tests on all the plugs and having one fail during testing I had hoped that this would be the issue. The new plugs turned up today - it wasn't.

At this stage I'm tearing my hair out, I've attached a picture of the system as well as a wiring diagram, when the plug in the picture is broken there's no issue however as soon as that is connected I'm getting heat right through the system.

Glow plugs are 6 Volt and correct, fusible link is heating a lot quicker with new plugs than with old. Sorry to be so long winded.

    Update...

Just did continuity tests on all components following the troubleshooting guide in the original manual... Everything came back fine. Glow plugs ok, Glow plug current sensor was fine, as were the two resistors. No 1 relay came back with a reading of 004 when in the off position and 0 when activated, No 2 relay came back with a reading of 015 when in the off position and 0 when activated. Other than something earthing when its not meant to I'm stumped.

    2H glow plugs

My father had similar problem easy fix KISS solution if each glow plug is good not earthing. check earth straps on vehicle run heavy duty switch from bat to switch then bar or use jumper leads from bat positive to bar on glow plugs to heat them up?? its reliable because your in control not some crappy relay. Its old fashioned but works??

    regards matt
