    Tar removal off semi alloy wheels....

    Hi all.

    So, I bought 10 Alcoa truck alloys last week.. Had a quick run down to Warrnambool last Fri to collect them. The price was right. Anyway, now I have them at home, and I have most of them looking 110% better than they did.. but 4 of them were either inners or outers on the rear, and have a decent/hard layer of tar on them.. I've hit them with the steam cleaner, citrus cleaner, brake clean, diesel, thinners, and some 'special stuff' that foams on contact with the alli... It softens the tar, but isn't doing me or anything else any good!! So, has anyone any suggestions for removing tar from wheels? . The one pictured is one of the clean ones!

    Or maybe acetone - that seems to dissolve most stuff!

    Hadn't thought of White Spirits, but have been on the lookout for some Acetone! Diesel usually makes a mess of the road when spilt, so I might still immerse one rim in a tub of diesel and keep brushing it on for a week.. See hot that goes..

    Look up a bitumen company and ask them how they clean their trucks.Ive seen the same trucks black after a run of jobs then looking brand new on the next job.

    We use diesel on our rims once back at the yard although it takes the shine off.
    The road crews will not let us do it on site as it "melts" the asphalt.
    If they been inners they will never have seen soap from when first fitted.

    Cheers.. I'll try the longer soak in Diesel, and then hit them again with the steam cleaner.

    Wax and Grease remover, aka prepsol, that's how I remove tar.

    Bitumen

    When we carried bitumen in bulk it was cut with kerosene, to dilute it for pumping. At the reception facility they centrifuge the kero out.

    It will soften in kerosene, ( or jet fuel), and probably diesel, but it probably will just take time, that will be a big tub to fit those wheels in . cheers simmo
