GU Patrol 3.0L - why such pain!

Have just replaced the flywheel and clutch in my brother's GU, now onto the passenger side engine mount. I must say, for a big 4wd they sure don't want you to work on these suckers without ripping the motor out!

We spent the better part of 4 days doing the flywheel and clutch, the biggest hurdle was space. The job was simple, but try moving the gearbox out with the engine in place! There's no room without practically flipping the box 180 to move rearward. Same applied to refitting it. What a pain!

The engine mount is just the same! Day 2, lots of bruised knuckles and cheerful words.

On any other vehicle I've worked on bar none both of these jobs can be tackled in a day.

    Rant over!

Anyone else had fun on a GU like this?

    Cheers
    Keithy

Yes they are certainly painful have done both those jobs you are tackling and i wasn't impressed either😠. Have a 2001 model towed in yesterday with a broken timing chain or something has let go in the timing case. All the valves into pistons as it happened at 80kmh.... it is a nice vehicle with leather and electrics etc but almost rendered worthless by a poor engine. 256000km only...

Did a clutch on a 2010 pajero 3.2 diesel today totally different experience was almost a joy to do 😮

The best thing to do with a patrol is rip the Nissan motor out of it and stick the bmw m57 in. Conversion kits off the shelf and upwards of 200Kw and 600Nm with simple mods.
    It's what I'd do if I had a patrol.
