Charging 24v Batteries with 12v Charger

My 101 runs a 24v starting system so has two standard 12v batteries in series.

I don't have a 24v battery charger so if I need to charge them I disconnect the link between the batteries and charge each battery individually with my 12v charger.

Recently I accidentally connected the 12v charger to one battery while the link was still connected and it did not seem to worry the charger and certainly the battery it was connected to got some charge - not sure about the one the charger was not connected to.

So - can I charge each battery individually while the link is still in place with the other battery or is it a no no - also if one battery is being charged what is the impact on the other battery?

The reason for asking is that it is a pain taking the battery covers off and disconnecting the link and if there is no issue charging each battery individually with the link in place - then I can run an andersen plug externally to each battery so that I can charge them without having to pull everything apart.

    Thanks

    i thought you could.

we've jump started a 24v truck from a 12v car by connecting the car to one of the truck batteries. boosted it just enough.

if the batteries get "out of balance" and you start running 24V cause the engine is running.. you will kill one of the batteries in short order.

just get a cheap 12-24v step up dc dc charger and plug it onto a cheap battery with a normal charger or solar panel on it.
