    CV Joint Boot.

    Just been under the car for an oil change and check up and found the near side front CV joint boot has a split in it. Obviously this now on the need to do very quickly list. I have had a quick look on rave but there is no specific procedure for replacing just the boot. Has anyone done one and if so what is the easiest / quickest method. Also I have seen Split type boots which zip up, again anyone had any experience of these good or bad.

    Looks like there is no quick way to do this then. I did find these instructions on another site. I will have to set aside an afternoon.

    "yes the swivels do need to be reset to align the oil seal properly if you remove the whole swivel. but if you remove the disc etc, the hub assembly is held into the swivel by 4 bolts, if you release these the hub will ( should!, they can rust in ) come away with the cv joint, if you want to take the cv joint out of the hub just crack the main hub nut before you start as it's easier with the wheel on. you should be able to withdraw the hub, cv joint and halfshaft all as one unit, service it on the bench and refit it, if the hub comes out nicely it should take no more than about an hour or two.

    never had a seized bolt yet in the 10 or 12 i have removed. Mabe if we salted our roads it would be another story. Just pull the hub, cv joint and axle out in one unit and dont bother with the nut on the end. The hardest thing will be getting the new cv boot on.

    Just a quick update. I have just fitted the new boot and its no big deal. As previously stated, remove wheel, remove calliper and bracket, remove ABS sensor then the 4 bolts holding the hub, I removed the brake shield to give access to tap the hub outward as the hub is a very tight fit but its not 100% necessary. Once out on the drive shaft there is a ring to stop crap getting at the oil seal. This ring makes it a lot harder to get the new boot on but the small end of the boot will stretch over. All up 2 hours, next one will be much less.
