That Amarok looks like not a bad ute. I just read the review on the 2010 Triton Auto and it was not that positive with the gearbox.

Funny thing is, I have been having thought's that maybe I could do something with my car. Thinking about maybe parting it out, cutting the losses and doing something sensible .

Was having a talk with a friend yesterday who hates everything the P38 stands for (Big, Heavy, Gas Guzzling 4X4) he drives a corolla. He said that yes getting rid of her might be good financially but at the end of the day What would you replace it with???? I suggested a triton or similar but it will be no match for the P.

That is the big question both my wife and I ask each other? Nothing I have driven compares to the character, military tank size bad handling off-road weapon station wagon that the P38 is. I would always be wanting another P38. I think it's a mental thing, most people only by them because they have always wanted one. They should come with free Psych appointments.

I guess this is what happens when you have the best at only 28. Where do you go from here. Anyway you only live once. Even SWMBO has said that we should keep her. Anything else will be a compromise. Maybe in a few years i'll get my head checked and do something about it.

If it's any consolation - a P38 on lpg is relatively green. I'm a greenie at heart honest, I've got my wife's car (Freelander) running on vege oil (free from the local fish & chip shop and zero emissions)

I went through the same thought process, but really what swayed it for me was a simple question. Would I take my P38 on a long trip (which I have wanted too do up through the highcountry) and the answer was No way.

Yes I agree the P38 is fantastic too drive and the ride confort is great, and its great in the scrub, but sitting in a toe truck isnt very comfitable. Not too mention the cashola I have spent on bringing it up too "semi-reliable" state. What really pushed me over the edge was too have 2 faults in the space of 50k's, First the EAS fault then the hose issue.

To make matters worse I am having a bugger of a job trying too purge the air from the coolant system. I tried all day Saturday and its still there. I really love these vehicles but as soon as its gone I will be much happier

    Simple.
You can spend $60,000.00 on a new vehicle or $20,00.00 on a p38 and have a far better vehicle.

My 1996 38 is 350,000km and running beautifully.

Yes I have spent the money but I am confident to take my car anywhere.

    Nothing like a Rangie.

I'm with RR01! Spend the bucks and have a car you know front to back and trust to take anywhere, or let it slide and keep your eye on the engine light or temp gauge the entire time!

It's worth the few bucks when you put it in low range!!

Having a hose blow is just a maintenance issue (this could happen on any engine dump the lot and renew all of them they will last 10 yrs.

What indications are you getting that points to air in your cooling system.
I can honestly say in 10yrs i have never had this problem and i change my coolant every 18 months or so.

Put your heater on Hi both sides?
Is your water pump sending a steady stream into the expansion tank?
With the EAS you can renew all your airbags and rebuild/O ring your EAS block, renew the piston and barrel on your compressor for about $1000 if you do the work your self.

    reliability

I would have to agree totally with some of the previous posts which recommend total maintainance. With these vehicles dont wait for something to go wrong before you fix it. Especially the cooling system--hoses, clamps, heater o rings, radiator etc. These probs can (will) kill your engine so fix them first.Air suspension, once it's sorted can be very reliable but airbags last 160000k's then renew and keep the old ones for spares.
These things are just examples of things that people neglect and then complain that p38's aren't reliable.
Mine has 245000k's and is reliable enough to go anywhere.
