    Coolant loss

I've been loosing a small amount of coolant for the past few weeks. Say half a litre per 500kms.
Found a few loosish hose clamps, fixed them but no change. Replaced my radiator cap with the original one, no change. NOTE. The original cap has 140 stamped inside, whereas the replacement one has 200. Which is correct.

But now I've found where the coolant goes. It drips out of the bellhousing!!

Even I know there is no coolant flow through the gearbox, so I think I've discovered the leak comes from the back of the drivers side head area.

I'm hopeing its the intake manifold gasket and not the head gasket. Any tips on this problem?

could be the welsh plug in the back of the block if it is definately coming from the bellhousing?

Or hopefully the pipe from the thermostat to the bottom of the manifold?

You know Ron, i was actually wondering whether I spelt it right, but my damn phone doesn't have a dictionary. So it is "welch" as opposed to "welsh". Hope I didn't offend any Welshmen's plug's!

I've always known it as a welsh plug ... but checking my Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary (I know, sooo last century!) and it reckons the words are interchangeable.

I hate to be a bearer of bad tidings, but I think it is most likely to be a leaking head gasket. Not a blown head gasket, just one leaking coolant. Some of these Rover V8 engines had an issue with that ... just ask me how I know! The only cure is to replace the head gaskets, checking for a slipped liner, or a heart transplant (the car's, not yours!) .

Dunno why as it is named after the inventors - the Welch brothers.

See History of the Welch Plug
'coz the "Hubbard Plug" sounds like something Scientoligists do to those who stray, and the "Pontiac Plug" is too brand-specific.... or maybe it's because people would rather spell words like they say them?

Maybe if they renamed it to the "Raquel Plug" in the 1960's it would be more memorable ... One Million Years B.C... hmmmm, tasty

An update on the coolant loss.

I figured I'd little to loose by trying a sealer first. Don't like using them, but since I've recently 'rodded' the radiator I figured it wouldn't do too much harm.
I used the Seal Up Cargo one that you have to remove coolant, fill with water and sealant, heat for 30 minutes, remove water , refill with coolant, drive and enjoy.

    Success!

Went for a nice offroad drive yesterday: Flea Creek, McIntyre Hut, Mt Coree for sunset.
Beautiful weather, virtually no other vehicles all day, until the climb up Mt Coree. Landrover Club were at the top.

Got talking to a Classic owner who is contemplating a P38, turned out he wasn't with the club either. Then his brother arrived in an old Pajero. He was very keen on a P38. Could be a large increase in P38 ownership in the capital soon.

My wife and friends had to get on with the sunset photograpy with out me!

Then my mate turned up with his P38!

And no, I didn't notice any oil slick pollution on the top!

    Anyway, no more coolant leaks.
