    Renew CV Joint

To remove the CV Joint the first Hurdle is to loosen the hub nut whilst the road wheel is still on. The Nut has a locking section which is bent into the recess on the CV Joint so this must be bent back before undoing the nut.
The Nut is 1 1/4 af and is unbelievably tight. I had to give up on my 1st try, I could not move it with a metre breaker bar. I took the car to a Truck tyre fitters and they loosened it with a 3/4" rattle gun with no problem.
To get at the CV Joint the Brake Caliper and holder must be removed. Then the Brake Disc and disc protector. These are all straight forward, The ABS sensor needs removing.
You are then faced with removing the Hub. This is held on with 4 x 15mm head bolts from the rear. once removed the hub and CV Joint and axle shaft come out forward. There is a potential problem here as the hub is a tight fit in the housing so could be corroded solid. I would suggest loosening the bolts a little and then tap them from behind to gradually force the hub outward Pic 4. Once out the big hub nut can be removed ( as it was loosened first) and you can have fun splitting the CV Joint from the Axle shaft.
I have never before been successful tapping a CV Joint off an Axle shaft but this time I tried something slightly different. I used a piece of 1inch right angle steel bar over the axle shaft and the 1st tap saw the CV joint pop off. Before refitting A new oil seal is recommended for the axle end. Grease around the Hub carrier to stop any future corrosion ( pic 5)and when finished get the Hub nut tightened to 200lb ft. I went back to the tyre Shop who torqued it, I then bent the locking section of the nut

    More PICS

My CV joint had been running with a split boot and full of sand for an unknown length of time. I had previously removed cleaned ,new grease and new boot but recently it started to click on full lock.
