I have just got back from the UK where i bought a 1999 P38 fitted with the BMW 2.5 diesel engine and auto trans.
I bought it off Ebay and it had 105000 miles on it and cost under 4000 pounds.
I ran it around Europe and some of Asian Turkey and put 30000 mile on the clock.
The main trouble i had was with Pirrelli tyres which i had fitted new .
Another Problem I had was the centre console switches packed up but managed to get a second hand set in Pristina (Kosovo). also the passengers door lock superlocked itself and i had to wait until l i got back to the UK before destroying the lock to get in and fit a new one.The car returned an average fuel consumption of 27 MPG that was including some off road work and mountain passes.
I ran the engine on fully synthetic oil and changed it every 8000 miles and also changed all filters regulary.
The car is now in storage in the UK and i hope to drive it across asia and ship to Australia some time.

just a idea , if you ever bring it to australia around 25 sept 2011 (on a sunday) or the next year,
may be you might want to bring it to LROC landrover expo in the sydney metro area (castle hill) or even at our club meeting at five dock so we can all have a sticky beak at it as it would be something different and rare , just a thought may be another show stopper like pauls hard range p38a on the ramp .

the DHSE is not so rare in the UK and if you go to eBay - one of the UK's largest shopping destinations you will find plenty of range rovers and the price of them would amaze you the V* ones in paticuler as nobody wants a gas guzzler there as fuel is about $2.80(Au) a litre.
Yes i will be eligible to have owned it for a year as i now have it in storage over in the UK.
although its not to powerful it suits my purposes and will cruise at 70 MPH all day returning good fuel consumption for a heavy car
I think you will find that you must own and be with the vehicle for a year, not just own. You must produce your passport and utility bills along with car registration, proof of insurance and servicing to establish you were with the vehicle.
I also recently read that the UK now require all vehicles regardless of use to be taxed and insured, failure to comply or inform the dvla that the car is no longer in any form of use will result in a fine and the car could be impounded.

I have imported a car and at the time this was required.
You are correct - you have to prove ownership and personal use in the 12 months immediately before importation. So from what Dave has indicated above this requirement will not longer be met. This means the taxes will be very high and it will not be economical to import the vehicle.

i was in the UK for 1 year and the vehicle has been Sorn and the MOT is current for 1 year so when i go back i can insure it and re register so that is no problem and i will probably be with it for another year before i import it but will get paperwork done before i leave again. Also as this model was not imported into Australia i think that could work in its favour
I hope all goes well with your plan however with the time, effort, costs involved is it worth it. You would be better off planning on a purchase to sell. Something exotic and rare over here and less than half in the UK. There are loads of choices. You can double your money then buy a local l322 diesel.
you can only import the vehicle as a personal import when you emmigrate here as a new migrant.
I emmigrated last year and bought my 99 diesel p38 over with me and the forms and paperwork i had to use to prove ownership and use for 12 months was huge.
i even had to prove beyond reasonable doubt that i intended to stay here once i imported it.
the vehicle then has to prove that it complies with the ADR and go through checks before it can be registered.
if it wasn't for the fact that i had room in my container and didn't have to pay for seperate shipping, i wouldn't have bothered.
