p38 high pitch whistle in low range

    hi all i've got a 96 p38 hse,

im in the process of setting her up for off roading but have come across an odd problem! when ever i put the transfer case into low range the car has started making a high pitch whistling sound when driving along!!

This is something that it started doing half way through my last of road experience and upon putting it into low range today found it is still doing it!!

Any insight to what this mat be would be very helpful

    cheers

Pretty safe to assume it is the transfer case.
    Check the fluid level.
I would drop the fluid out of the transfer case and see whats in it.

    That is good then.
When you say "oil" you mean transmission fluid?
Because i have heard of people putting gear oil in there
Cant say im an expert on the Transfer case, but i think they are a pretty robust unit, not many people have trouble with them. They are genrally regarded as the best in the business in a Landy.
Does the noise sound like it is mechanical? a bearing, etc? (this would not seem to be the case if the fluid is clear of debris)
My brother inlaw has a P38 and i know the sound that comes from his transfer case always alarms me when i drive it, his problem (unconfirmed) is the Morse chain in the T/case.

yup used the right gear oil

um its kind of a similar sound to a flogged out tail shaft centre bearing, but the car only has 180.000 on the clock and has never been off road, well before i got it anyway. it still seems to be working perfectly in both high and low range tho and only makes the noise in low range so i can't put my finger on it :-/

Thats good on the fluid them.

Take it down to a Landy specialist and ask them what they think.
I am pretty sure you will get some idea from some one on the forum soon enough.
Ron Becket will probably come up with an idea

hey mate, if it sounds like it is supercharged or something in low range, thats normal... i'v had 2 P38's now n they both do it, so does my mates one.
