Brake fluid leak near booster assy - looks like the pressure reducing valve leaking

Leslie's 1996 RR has needed the brake fluid topping up twice in recent months (low level warning light flashing on). The first time I just thought is was low fluid from pad wear but for it to go low again after a month or so, I suspected a leak somewhere.

All 4 wheel areas were fine but I found it wet with fluid under the ABS booster / coolant expansion tank area.

I gave it a quick degrease & wash down on Friday night & had a look on Saturday. I can't get my hand down there to check what exactly is leaking but, from appearances, it looks like the pressure reducing valve is leaking.

I've never come across this on the P38 before so I thought I'd ask if anyone else has had this leak before.
So...has anyone else had this leak before ?

Work has only bought in 3 in the last 10 years so it doesn't seem to be a common leak point.

Haven't seen the valve leak before not to say they don't but I have seen the seals on the bottom of the resevior where it mounts onto the main unit leak with age.
There is a metal tag on the side of the resevior with an allen key headed bolt securing it, remove that and pry the resevior off ( small barbs on the resevior make it a little difficult but can be done) when the resevior is off take the opportunity to clean it out and check flow to the pressure pump.
    Regards

Just be sure it is the valve.
I had a hose leak in that area 2 years ago it was hard to track down.
I wrapped some cloth torn into 30mm strips around suspect areas and fittings.
Brake fluid is very runny stuff and soon spreads making it hard to locate leaks in tight spaces.

Thanks Peter, the booster will be coming off & having the metal disc kit put through it soon (after the move) so the reservoir seals will be done as a matter of course then.

I'll take the coolant reservoir out one night this week & give the area a good wash down. After washing down last weekend, the dampness appeared to be right under the valve. The booster itself seems very dry.
I'll stick some paper under the valve once it's all dry & see what drips.

it can all leak into that area. normally the proportioning valve (the small gold cast metal nugget, there are lots of names for it) leaks so badly you can see it drip. if you are uncertain, it can be temporarily by passed either by using a joiner or carefully bending one of the pipes to fit back in the modulator forming a loop.
these valves have a seemingly obvious floor in the bottom plate which causes the leak, but if you investigate further you will find this is only a dust cover and no fluid should be behind the plate. the leak is from the piston seals and escaping through the vent into the void space. if you seal up the bottom plate as recommended on some web sites the valve does not work as it should so is the same as leaving it by passed.

Must be the week for it! My Mother's 1986 Rover Vandenplas V8 has a leaking Brake Proprtioning Valve too.
Getting her the replacement unit from Sam at RangeLand.

Scott - please take some photos if/when you do the investigation and repair.

    Cheers, Paul.

Yes, I needed to get new pressure reduction valve installed as it was leaking.

I believe it is relatively common, but I'm surprised to hear that you don't think so !

I only thought it was uncommon because I've never come across this before & work (LR genuine parts wholesaler) has only sold 3 in the last 10 years.

Anyway, it is the valve leaking so I'll order one in for tomorrow.

I got an "exchange" one, apparently they can be renewed.

    Didn't cost much IIRC

Scott, I need to do my brake booster, too - I got the kit from Russell last year.

Maybe we could do them both at the same time and assist each other to do them and bleed the brakes? I can probably borrow a workshop and hoist.

I have a spare booster that could be used to work over and swap.
