    P38 ABS Query

The shuttle valve problem in the P38 ABS module. I am aware that this issue afflicted the early P38s buit was the problem overcome by a factory redesign/better quality parts at any stage. Are the Bosch/Thor engined P38s of say 1999, 2000 and 2001 going to experience the same [expensive] problem?

    Thanks guys.

I am aware of the Disco II having an ABS Shuttle Valve problem, but not the P38 (not trying to be smart, there may well be a problem that I hadn't heard about).

    Stuff I am aware of:

    • Pre-99 P38's are more likely to have cracked/broken locating washers in the Brake Modulator as they were made of plastic, and was supposedly fixed in mid-99. Russell of Range Rover Solutions does a BM Repair kit. We sell a lot of these.
    • I've seen a few requests lately for the P38 ABS Pressure Switch. AFAIK the ABS Pressure Switch is not available as a standalone part, and is included only with the ABS pump kit at over $1k from LR or your favourite UK suppliers.

Hope this helps, and/or please tell me more about the ABS Shuttle Valve issue.

    Cheers, Paul.

Hello Paul – thanks for the explanation – that clarifies things for me very well.

It would seem that in my mind after reading many posts on ALRO that I have not only mixed up the problem between the Discos and the P38s but then also got the terminology wrong as well. My apologies for that.

    Many thanks for responding.

In a couple of posts either here or on RR.net, AFAICR Russell has noted that some early examples of the Bosch/Thor series were fitted with the said plastic washers..probably running down the inventory and therefore needed to be upgraded accordingly... for his brilliant ABS Mod Kit, Russell B. is indeed a worthy recipient of the yet-to-be established "P38 Hall of Fame" award...now there's an idea!!

I wouldnt call it expensive to over come this problem.
I bought the kit for my 95 model for $100 and it took a good days work to overhaul the ABS module.
Mine had not failed but im glad i put the kit through it as my plastic spring retainers were quite brittle.
With parts, brake fluid and your own labour $150 will get the job done no problem.
