    Transfer box ECU

Help someone please i have just fried a second transfer box ECU.
No warning except driving along at slow speed message came on dash display saying select nuetral. I pulled over selected nuetral and i smelt the dreaded electrical insulation smell. Vehicle went to low range so i had to jump under and manually select high. Hot wired the shift motor to get it in high and reassembled it. Tried driving home would not select fourth till i got to 90 km and never did get torque converter lockup.
Why do they fry? I opened it up when i got home different component than last one tried a repair no luck. Will have to buy another, can i fit a computer cooling fan or something has anyone got an answer. The unit is an ERR5881 is a newer unit available and do they last?

You had better research this however its taken from another respected site............

the redesigned version looks slightly different without going out and removing mine i think it had more pronounced (or totally new) heatsinks and i guess internal changes to.
i think new part is AMR 6459, old part is either AMR 5252 or ERR5881 or AMR5807

    Here is another comment.......
the transfer box hi/lo motor has problems and can burn out transfer box ecu,i

Thanks for the help i am trying to purchase the one you indicated.
Will check the motor before i install the new unit it really puts a dampener on a good vehicle and makes the wifes Nissan Patrol the pick for any long range driving at present just can't trust the Rangie anymore.

quite often the motor and ecu do a murder suicide, and both go. I would be changing them both to be sure.

Transfer motor ok fitted new computer and spare is in back incase. All going well since installation been up to the high plains this week plus some highway work. Tyres 265/75/16 MT's are making changes a bit different but computer is great after reset.

So did you fit the later type with the improved cooling fins or is that what you already had?

Installed the later styled unit and have one for spare under drivers seat just in case. Checked during the last week running cool and put up about 1,600 kms. Did Dargo and some of the tracks including Talbotville lot of low range no problems. Then took three days with the wife toured to Ballarat across to Maldon etc and home all going well. Then towed the boat to Sandy point and back heres hoping.
