    Question question for electrical whiz

    G'day
I have a few questions concerning some electronic components of the P38
-what gives the signal to the ECU, as far as engine running is concerned?
is it the crank positioning sensor?
    - what gives the signal impulse for the tachometer?
-if there is no input from the throttle pos sensor, what would happen?
    - does the transmission shift by default or go to trans fail mode. if there are not all signal inputs as they should?
    thank you guys
    ~michael

By the "ECU" I presume you are referring to the BECM under the ?passenger'seat in the NAS spec vehicle
    1. That ECU receives siginals from multiple sources: Crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, signals from the fuel injection computer called the EMS, throttle position sensor, the ABS and many others

2 The tach gets its signal as best I understand from the alternator.

    3. the transmission ECU talks continuously to the BECM and may default to a "limp home" mode

Do you have a copy of RAVE? Search for it on the web and download it. It is an electronic copy of the LR workshop manuals for the P38/Disco/Defender and Freelander...several thousand pages of searchable pdf documentation. It has voluminous pages of explanation on matters you raise.
    cheers

Your fitting a manual, the BECM can be changed to manual transmission

The guy I've been dealing with, who has done alot of P38 engine conversions see's it all no drama's, I've just gotta machine the adaptor and fit it all

Yes, I meant the BeCM, you're absolutely right.
I wonder what will happen if some of the inputs are missing...
I think I could imitate some crank shaft sensor input. but certainly no camshaft signal from EMS...

I am trying to first see what happens , if I leave the zf24 installed and then what I need to do to make it work. If that fails or seems not feasible, then I'll convert to manual
Do you have a email address for that person, who did all these P38 conversions? might be good to pick his brain (:
