I've avoided ethanol blends because of the issues with the fuel gauge sender which I experienced a couple of years ago...
It's an interesting observation about 91 Octane causing pinging and possible detrimental effects in turn re. liner stabiilty... I thought that was what the knock sensors in the Thor (at least) were for ...or are they not used in all engines?

I'd have thought that with such low compression engines (< 8.5:1 ?) for a standard australian spec import, the 91 Octane is OK. However I normally run 95 octance and if I have a Coles docket and I'm away from Bris where the prices are FIXED I find that 98 octane causes the beast to run very smoothly on a long trip and overall consumption figues of 11.5 -12.2 L/100km (from the pump) not uncommon!

I use Bosch Platinum plugs, the ones with the 4 electrodes in my 4.6 D2 on std computer. They were a good price at the time. They are always clean (not black anyway). Std unleaded (low oct) pings its head off, trying to work out if it's underfuelling or the fuel itself. But on premium it's ok except under heavy load until it kicks down a gear or two.

With low octane fuel it creates an inconsistent burn condition in the cylinder this equals hot and cold spots within the cylinder this equals slipped liners??

As i have said previously the user manual states 95 RON fuel or higher.
I have not had any problems running the ethanol enhanced 95 octane fuel in 12 years and 200,000kms.
