    p38 starter motor replacement

    DECIDE TO CHANGE MY STARTER MOTOR TODAY I HAD BEEN PUTTING THIS OFF FOR A WHILE BECAUSE THE LOCATION OF THE TOP BOLT. OK THIS IS HOW I WENT ABOUT IT . FIRST I REMOVED DRIVERS SIDE FRONT WHEEL AND THEN REMOVED THE PLASTIC INNER WHEEL ARCH LINER. AT THIS STAGE YOU CAN EASILY ACCESS THE STARTER MOTOR AND BOLTS USING A 5/16 HEX SOCKET . NOW FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO STILL HAVE THE EXHAUST SHIELDS IN PLACE THIS CAUSES I BIT MORE WORK AS THE OUTER SHIELD WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED. I WAS A BIT LUCKY AS I DIDNT HAVE ANY OF THE OUTER SHIELDS STILL IN PLACE ONLY THE INNER ONES WHICH AFTER REMOVING ONE BOLT AND A LITTLE BIT OF BENDING I WAS ABLE TO GET MY HEX SOCKET AND 3/8 DRIVE RACHET IN THERE. I REMOVED ELECTRIC CABLES AND PLUG AFTER LOWERING IT DOWN . CONNECTED CABLES TO NEW ONE THEN LIFTED INTO PLACE.

    Hi P38driver - thanks for sharing the pics and your method.

    A bit hard to read all in CAPS LOCK though.

    Guessing that the first thing you did before going near the starter was to disconnect the battery

    I am worried about you driving around with the exhaust heat shield removed. The amount of heat generated is huge and may damage nearby plastic and rubber components.

    i used a hex socket which is a socket with a allen key inserted in the end of it , regarding the heat shields the outer ones were missing when i bought the car 4 years ago , thanks for the replys .

    I may have missed some very important information in my original post regarding starter motor replacement . Thanks for Paul for reminding me about the safety aspect when working on cars . Disconnecting battery when working on car electrics and always use jack stands when working under your car.
    i have attatched picture of hex socket used 5/16 x 3/8 drive for Rons info. Just one more thing about heat shields , has anybody had any problems driving around without them fitted ?.
