    Well to close this out...
Got a reply from Dave Ashcroft today advising that the 5HP24 is not compatible with the existing TC and can't be independently run using the Compushift product...
    Well there goes that idea...
Back to painting the spare room... maybe
    cheers

    No!!!

Hi all, even if you could do it, id say DONT!!! its a crap box compared to a 4hp 24, not a hardy box in slightest. Ive got an Audi A8 at the moment, and read any Audi forum on it...

What about a L98 aka Holden VE 6.0L with a 6L80E 6 speed auto with custom adapter? If you can put a diesel V8 into a P38, why not a donor alloy V8?

Aside from the cost, the complexity of the L98 is a lot more than the "relatively" simple diesel (6.2L GM) discussed elsewhere. There are software bits to be developed to interface the BECM/ L98 engine ECU/ auto trans ECU/etc ..and that is assuming one could get hold of the source code... then there's the transfer case adaption, new axles etc to take the power...

I'd be happy with just say 30 -50 bhp extra, and a modest torque increase in the 1800-2500 rpm band... which has got me thinking about a mild (say 5 psi) supercharge boost... I think that would be a more feasible proposition than a complete engine transmission swap.

Further, transplanting an engine of significantly greater capacity than the original brings all sorts of bureaucratic requirements with the Dept of Transport here in Qld as no doubt it does in other States as well.

    I'm a fan of the GM L series V8s though ..

The conversion may be complex but I've amassed a fair bit of information and research for when it's time to convert my disco 2 when it comes to interfacing existing systems, upgrading drivetrain components and adapting the transmission to the transfer case. I'll have a dig around for P38 electronics and see if there is any similarities.

I have to go with what you say about your Dept of Transport regarding engineering requirements but here in NSW, a Discovery is a 4x4 vehicle and has different and more generous set of rules when it comes to engine swaps.

I've also looked at supercharging too aswell as remote turboing. The problem for me is the Motronic and lack of tuning options for it.

Back on topic though, is there some other way of getting a fifth gear or a better spread of gears on a P38?

I have done a fair bit of research into the bigger engines and different ZF options and different engines and boxes, bottom line is unless you have a lot of money stick with the ZF24 and a modest amount of HP/torque increase to the point of still within the boxes limits

Have you considered the 1UZ-FE Toyota V8? Sure it's only 4.0l, but with 210kw and 400nm standard, it's a monster motor. I just don't understand why people keep trying to go with pushrod motors when there are OHC motors around.

I know when my motor finally dies, the 1UZ will be at the top of my conversion list.

    Cheers,
    Keels.

Yes would have to agree about the 1UZ-FE monster motor. Bullet proof bottem end, 6 bolt mains, very smooth and heaps of power. Would have to be retune for off road work as it likes to rev. Torque is developed high in the rev range IIRC. Later versions where 4.4 or 4.5 litre too. The Only problem apart for all the electronics that it is a MONSTER MOTOR very wide. you would need to do a lot of measuring to make sure it would fit first. But I like the idea. Who's going to pull the trigger first.
