    Lack of power

    I'm scratching my head on this one. There is no power until the revs reach 3000 rpm. I've cleaned the MAF sensor, replaced the petrol pump with a Holden unit and replaced the fuel filter. I'm going to have a look at the new fuel filter as it could be blocked after stirring 16 years of gunk up when I put the new pump in - could it be anything else? (I don't have a faultmate) the car is a 96 4.6 and I'm now getting 22.7 around town when I used to get 19.5

    That's shocking economy! Around town the worst I've seen is 16.5! Even in low range a fortnight ago, 19.2 average over 100km of low range!

    Ouch!

    x2 re. MAF. It's possibly running rich ... have you checked the air cleaner?

    my guess is your injectors. the original ones were total crap new so with miles on them and the possibility of the injector baskets being clogged due to "string up the tank" as you said. mine was getting that sort of mileage and worse, changed to bosch gen 3 injectors (cant remember pn) and 3 cans of suby cleaner and it went to 11 l/100 highway and 13-15 round town. its still thirsty tho used 40 liters in the last 6 months and it hasn't been started in that time, damn evaporation.

    PoleonPom came up and we hooked up the car to the Nanocom.. Only GEMS Engine Error was P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction. We cleared the error for no change...

    Decided to try one of my Spare MAF's and everything seemed much, much better. We reset the Adaptive Values after this and we'll see over the next week whether the issues are resolved.

    Thanks all and a Big Thank You to BC for helping me with the beast.

    Last week I was getting a shocking 23.7 l/100 around town, on my trip to BC it was 18.6 and, at times, I really thought I wasn't going to make it - on the hills I had to change down to 2nd to make it (reminded me why I can't abide cars with piddly engines).

    I'd cleaned the MAF- nothing. Disconnected it - nothing.

    At BC's he connected up the Nanocom and I'm expecting a whole reel of stuff and there's practically nothing wrong apart from P0340 and a blend motor, of course. As the MAF doesn't register as a fault we swap out the MAF with a spare that BC has and 'hey presto' - sweeter note at the loud end. BC also resets the adaptive values.

    So, I take the old girl for a spin and she's much improved: freer through the revs and more responsive.

    Before leaving BC and his enviable garage, I reset the onboard computer, have a much easier drive home and get, wait for it...............12.3 l/100 :-)

    The only issue is the car still hesitates a bit before accelerating and still doesn't feel like she has full power (although there's no doubt that the MAF had failed) I recently replaced the crank sensor and I'm wondering whether it's correctly fitted, hence the P0340 fault code?

    I think that hesistation is just the Air Flow Meter itself. I don't think it's quite "right" from the Seller in the UK... I think it might be more suitable on an Oxygen Sensor Car because it worked fine on my Wife's 97 GEMS... but it doesn't seem to like life on the 95 GEMS Models...

    I suggest maybe you buy a Good "Used" one from something like
    Range Rover P38 Lucas Air Flow Meter 94-99. | eBay

    Then see if that works better than the New/Reco one I've given you.

    Back to square 1.

    After all the positive signs from yesterday, today the car has resumed its hesitating stance.

    I changed back to the old MAF and noticed no improvement or further decline. I also cleaned out the fuel filter which ha a bit of loose black dirt. I also swapped to the old crank pos sensor that I replaced after misdiagnosing its replacement when it was the fuel pump - took it for a run, but it stalled and wouldn't restart - guess I was right in the 1st place.

    So, tomorrow I plan to swap back to the new CPS. So, it seems that the only sensor left is the Cam sensor that I haven't swapped or replaced. The fuel filter was recently replaced and cleaned out well.

    Well, who said RR ownership was going to be easy!
