Thread: cracked liner?

You can pressure test the block while still in the car but you need to blank off the water galleries on the deck.

Check the tops of the liners & see if you can feel if one is slightly lower than the others.

ihave just been told by my local mec that the 4.6 runs dry liners so even if the liner is cracked it wont let any water in because the liners dont have water running directly around them.does this sound true?

Most times if the liner's cracked, it's from the head bolts behind it cracking the block which then lets coolant through.

Well It would be if it was relevant but it isn't.
What happens is that the block behind the liner cracks and water rises between the block and liner and gets into the combustion chamber , because the head gasket does not adequately cover the join.

This may pressurise the cooling system, or if small just result in a clean cylinder and mysterious loss of water.
Any one got the Robison reference ?

Perhaps you need a Rover specialist mechanic. All Four x 4 at Kotara http://www.allfourx4.com.au/ are LR specialists as are Modern Motors at Dungog http://www.modernmotors.com.au/.

I didn't think that liners normally cracked but the block material around them does and they slip.

I've seen a few that have leaked through the liner itself, initially thought to be porous but now (in the light of the Robison tests) probably cracks.
