    Roll-off tyre carrier!!!

Hey guys anyone tried to build a slide back & down spare tyre carrier for roof rack? Have been thinking about this for some time now and have just bought roof rack so am about to start. Thought was to make sliding frame on rollers that would slide off back of rack & tilt to rest on rear bumper, this would make mount & dismount of spare less of a chore & much safer. Once back on top would be locked into position.
Have not seen one like this before so if anyone has or has seen pics please let me know. Might help avoid problems. Would also look to incorporate handles and maybe even gas strut to assit with weight of 33" Muddy.

It would be easy to bolt a frame to the upper tailgate similar to the rear ladders. You could even incorporate a ladder into it.

Not exactly a back and down carrier (and its a Pootrol forum) - but I reckon there's some good ideas here about spare wheels on roof racks:

I will have the same problem. I have swapped my steel rims to the same alloys as the car thus reducing some weight. I plan to drop the tailgate down but also then close the upper lid down. I plan to roll the wheel up my leg to sit it on the tailgate then hop up on the tailgate and do the same leg roll to get some height on the wheel and hope to put it up that way.

I have just fitted the Rhino Racks but have yet to get a basket so I don't know if it will work.

That's exactly how I do mine. It works, but pretty hefty load and you don't want to get off balance at all.

Well guys you have just made me more determined to sort this out!
It just has to be done and I don't think its gonna be all that difficult to come up with something that will make like easier & safer and less expensive than a $2k - $3k option the likes of some Well know Names. Once I've got something sorted will post pics for all to crucify or congratulate! Just may take a while!
Still waiting on rack to be delivered.

If you're into building stuff and not 100% set on having it on the roof, what about something like these:
Rear Bumpers and Tire Carriers for Range Rovers

You can buy most of the tricky bits like the latches and hub etc at a reasonable price from Rijidij who's a member here.

Thanks Steve, checked this site out previously, only problem with P38 rear tyre carrier does not quite suit look of vehicle and takes up most of rear view thats why I'm more leaniong towards roof mount, mainly for my muddies, so when I have normal road wheels on can live with spare in boot. thanks for suggestions though!
