Spare parts/tools/strange items to carry for field repairs!? Novel fixes achieved?
I thought it might be helpful to pull together from peoples experience what they see as essential and useful parts and tools to carry for trips. Especially P38 specific. Might throw up some things none of us have thought would be useful. How far do you go with parts?
In the UK the off-roading tends to more at organised 'pay and play' events, there is not a lot of the countryside you are allowed to drive unfortunately! This means there are usually marshals and lots helpful people to pull together to get someone out of a problem/challenge! Over here a breakdown is a lot more dangerous!
I'd always carry my socket set, ring spanners, pliers, screwdrivers, hacksaw, wood saw. But didn't tend to carry a lot of parts just an air/fuel filter and a can of easy start. I was in a pretty standard series 111 back then. Snapped the front Chassis arm once and bridged a block of wood between the arm and the chassis, got me out and home! Would have to tap it back into place every now and again on the way back!
What do people carry?
Parts: Air/fuel filters, spark plugs, CRC, liquid gasket, good old duct tape and cable ties. I've heard vaseline can be good for putting on electrics for water crossing, a tarp that will cover your radiator, puncture repair kits....

Good list mate!
If I am going somewhere remote ill take a 36mm spanner, jumper leads, spare (old) bags and my faultmate on top of the things you have mentioned.
Wish I had spare bags for my Maytown trip at Easter as I popped one then, other than that I have never needed to repair my P38 away from home. It is the most reliable vehicle on every trip I have ever been on. The other vehicles include 100 series cruisers, navaras, pathfinders, patrols, and even disco's and defenders.
Have I got a freak P38?

Yeh I carry my whole set of old bags (before the gen 3 upgrade) as I'm super paranoid about popping bags in the bush. And with my 32's the spare don't fit anyway so the wheel well has space to fit this stuff now.
A spare compressor to pump the suspension and tyres up is another thing to add. Duct tape, fencing wire, repair putty for leaks in stuff, and cable ties are other additions I carry.

Let's hope mine is as reliable as yours Keithy, pick it up tomorrow! As with most cars, it comes down to how well the cars been looked after. The one I bought got full service history, couldn't see any signs of off road, the guy selling has had it 7 years and I went to the garage that has been taking of it and spoke to the mechanic, all seemed very genuine. Fingers crossed it's OK, not many on the market!
Think I'll look into buying a spare bag to put in the boot too. Deffo a compressor. I've ordered one of the Faskit emergency EAS kits, I know I could have made my own ALOT cheaper but it's all nicely packaged.
I gave all my tools to my dad when I left the UK, gonna be an expensive exercise building the collection again!

Touch wood but mines been pretty good as well. Well for 4 months or so 
But mine was a single owner, always serviced at a reputable place after warranty and only like 150,000 km's on it.
After taking it bush its still in good nick, but not quite as new as it was when I first got it. The little scratches underneath and light ones up the side all add character ha ha.

When travelling off road (or on a long trip) I always carry my Blackbox FCR, a length of air hose for the suspension along with a couple of connectors (in line and "T" pieces), I have one of the HRA EAS bypass kits fitted and also carry an additional compressor (also useful for pumping up your tyres once you are off the sand tracks around WA). As far as tools, a set of open end / ring spanners as well as a socket set, hammer, Allen keys, Torx wrenches plus the usual pliers side cutters knife etc. Then there's the duct tape, super glue, a few cable ties, electrical wire as well as a range of fuses and a multimeter.
I also take my iPad along for the ride where I have the RAVE manual loaded.
Oh, and the recovery gear for rescuing Toys and Nissy's as well as the odd Paj.
In reality it seems a total overkill (or maybe I'm just a bit paranoid) as the only time I have had to use the tools has been on other peoples cars, except for the time recently when I had to remove what was left of a rear shock absorber on my car
. The shaft of the shock absorber is presumably somewhere on the side of a track in Karijini National Park.

One can only hope so UK! My last P38 was just as good a machine, albeit in better visual condition, but mechanically this one feels much tighter and responsive even though my other was a 2000 and this one's a '99!
I have a faultmate msv-2 extreme! Have never used it in anger, only to give myself a factory 'lift' in standard and high settings. Once your used to it they are quite handy!

Always take our portable fridge/freezer which I bought off my brother in law when he updated to a larger one for his boat. Works off the mains and car battery. Having ice is nice! Also apart from a litre of oil and a spare fan belt the spares depend on where you are going. Scotland and blankets and bars of chocolate/drinks and normally have a portable gas stove for a brew up or emergency meal. Also always take a packet of Q-Bond it repairs almost anything is super strong and sets in seconds and a quality small compressor. Smart phone, sat nav and a spare of walking shoes. A spade if snow and then a thermus with hot drink. Probably lots of other things but still have space. If taking the dogs hunting use the rear box draws with the dogs on top.
The cross is a couple of plasters from the first aid kit to help mend a little bump! Been on two years and think it's helping?

in addition a couple or tow ropes, tarp, and duct tape. Would love a rear diff locker and one of those dash cameras that record on a continious loop so I could have watched several German drivers crashing their cars in the snow last year! the list could go on forever!! Oh and always take the TestBook T4 - never had to use it but you never know.

This stuff lives in the car and doesn't take up much room at all. Be specific, know what your car uses and needs.
- Compressor
- EAS Bypass kit
- recovery gear
- puncture repair kit
- basic tool kit
- fuses and relays (couple of bits of wire)
- globes
- air lines and T pieces
- couple of spare hoses
- Tarp
- Ropes
- Duct tape
- BRAKE FLUID!... If that puppy runs dry, pull out the wallet...
- RAVE
- Front and rear bag (I only take them on long trips)
- Jumper leads
- an old CamelBack bladder. (great for collecting water in if needed and takes up no room)
Do proper checks, morning routines etc and you will be fine. It only takes a couple of minutes to pop the bonnet and check and clean a quality filter, check levels and check for loose nuts etc.
Wouldn't worry about too much else, let's face it, in a P38, you're not far from a servo to fill up the petrol and oil anyway!
