Z9 oil filter instead of Z89A

I did engine oil change yesterday (chose Valvoline 10W40 Armour - $28-5L). I bought the legit Z89A oil filter (AUD9) and because I know the Z9 filter to be similar and larger, I bought it too. I compared them on the bench and they look the same. The specs are the same too, except for the length. In filters, I think bigger is better and since it fitted fine, and did not protrude dangerously I am using it.

Anyone think this is a big mistake?
Is the filter specc'd to the oil pump?
The Z9 was cheaper and more available?
The Z9 was used on the Classic RR.

On some LRs there is a danger of the front axle contacting the filter when articulating the front suspension if the longer Z9 is used.

What did you put it on ? If it was a disco 1 it will be too long and get belted during axle articulation.....Goodbye engine oil.
I don't know about all models.

I have been using generic Z9 filters or equivalent in every Range Rover V8 I have owned , never a problem. The early Range Rover filters were even longer than the Z9, In the uk I used the Ford V6 engine filter (x19) as these were the cheapest. Only problem I have ever had was in the mid 1970`s when I had a 1965 Series 2a with a 3.5 V8 shoehorned in. There was not enough room for any oil filter, I ended up using one about 3 inches deep. Again never a problem
Always used 20/50 and change oil and filter very often.

Good info Wayne, i took a look under mine just now and confirmed that the only thing that could come into contact with it is the panhard rod, and I doubt it will move that far. Ill do some careful tests.

The million dollar question remains, why did LR change from Z9 to Z89A when introducing the P38, when it was basically the same bottom end block?

Standardised the filter across engine families as a Z9 length filter fouls the front diff at full bump with a 300Tdi in a Disco or Deefer.

This can be 'fixed' with judicious use of an angle grinder on the diff

FWIW I use either a Donaldson P169071 or Fleetguard LF3487.

These are synthetic media, super high efficiency/high flow versions of a Z9/AFL-1 filter (and their price reflects that)

    A Z9 is fine on a V8 D1.
Never had an issue using them on my MY95 which sees the occasional 4wd park etc.

So the rich Folks who bought one could feel special as they were paying more ( for less)

I was referring to the 300TDI.

    They didn't.
The Z89 was introduced with 3.9, because the newly fitted oil cooler takeoff "sandwich" moved the filter forward enough to hit the diff.
I don't know what happened when the new oil pump was introduced but I assume it also puts the filter in harms way.
