    Replacing all my relays

    Hi

    1999 HSE 4.6 with bosch electronics

    After replacing the infamous RL7 to get the HEVAC working again, my mechanic mate and i were looking at how some of the other yellow relays were browning as well.

    We came to the conclusion that it would be best to replace all the relays we can find. They are after all around 14 years old and all electromechanical components have a finite lifespan.

    One important point is that the original relays are diode protected and the replacements must also be. Resistor protected is not good enough.

    This brings my to my questions;

    Firstly; the ABS relay seems to be Genuine only, apparently it is a dual contact 70 amp beastie. Does anyone know a source for these at less then around $150.00 each?

    Secondly; Are there other relays apart from those in the Fuse box? I am thinking the BECM might have some.

    have a look at Range Rover P38 alternative spare part's list. for alternatives to the yellow relays. A search on this forum (use the custom Google one at bottom of page) as well as www.rangeorvers.net is helpful... there's been a series of posts over the past several years as to worthwhile replacements. If all else fails, buy a dozen or so from the usual UK suppliers.. they're often 1/3rd the price of the local stockists. Being "light" the postage is greatly reduced as a proportion of the total cost of the bits. Someone also posted on here a while back their success in sourcing generic Siemens-branded relays of the correct spec. -diode protected ..

    Hi Hoges

    I managed to source most of the correct relays , the normally open (yellow ones) i got a Hella version and Narva had a diode protected changeover relay (the green ones).

    I did a heap of reading on RR.net, that's how I found out about the special ABS relay (the black one).

    When i searched on the part number for the ABS relay i got references to Ferrari and Maserati fuel pump relays as well as the P38.

    I will go for the UK suppliers, i need one of the weird radiator hoses as well, mine is a bit soft.

    Get your mechanic to check the fuse box itself. I have a 1998 Gems RR and after having the motor stop on me when I flashed the lights at a guy in Longreach, played around with the fuses and got it started. We went looking for the cause when I got home to Wodonga and found the fuse board was just about knackered. Talking to the Auto Elec guy, he said most are starting to show signs and we elected to put a new fuse board in.

    I replaced my fuseboard with one from the UK about 2 yrs ago. It came loaded with a new set of fuses and most of the relays...when I 'deconstructed' the original it was well past its prime...

    It seems to be happy with a new set of relays so far, but i certainly will have a good look at the fusebox very soon.

    The only problem i encountered was that the Hella 3053 4 pin relays had a built in mounting tab which i had to cut off. The Narva 68048 5 pin changeover relays dropped straight in.

    Next project is installing the hard range eas block ;-)
