Charcoal canister
Has any one disconnected this annoying waste of space under the bonnet?
Mine has a slight leak that works its way down the chassis rail and drips on the CAT.

It's an integral part of the fuel tank ventilation and should never have any liquids in it. So I'm suspecting your fuel tank breather system is passing neat petrol to the canister, which of course will leak and possibly catch fire. If you're going to remove the canister, disconnect the fuel tank breather at the fuel tank and fit an inline filter. Then also moisture will be drawn into the fuel tank and rust any metal fittings. Perhaps your fuel tank is just too full. I'd be fixing the system before modifying it.

Mmm I have been wondering how it is getting liquid up there.
I havnt had a MAX fuel fill for a while.
Im suspecting that I have a crack of some sort in the sodding thing.
I will have to pull the sucker out and take a look.

OK,
Pulled the Charcoal canister out this arvo.
Thought I knew my RR pretty well after 13 yrs.
There is a breather behind the Canister, it looks like it heads off down into the top of the transmission area.
Under the canister was a thick oily goop like that you would find in under a really old dirty rocker cover.
I checked my ATF level it looked to be over full, drained off a litre and put another 200ml back in, level looks good by the dip stick.
For good measure I have an empty Corona bottle jammed between the guard and cruise control apparatus with the hose fitted into it lets see if it blows any ATF out now.

Anyone removed the EVAP system altogether? I think 996 Turbo did to help with the snorkel/air filter install - which is what I'm contemplating.
Surely it does two fifths of naff all in terms of fuel economy (rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic spings to mind) and in terms of the environmental impact. Given the emissions test for a RWC is via the exhaust, it wouldn't affect that.
As was mentioned earlier - could the pipe from the tank to the engine bay be retained, and a one way breather be installed instead?

Looking in the manual its only from 99 that all the extra smog gear is fitted to the P38.
Mine doesnt have o2 sensors or the extra smog gear.
The charcoal canister doesnt do anything apart from collect fumes from the fuel tank, this is evacuated via a purge line under solenoid control which dumps it into the plenum. It seems this keeps a vacuum on the tank.
As bee utey says best leave it be.

Just read the RAVE manual and have to concede that the system does rather more than I'd understood - as with most things P38 related. Will contemplate moving, rather than eliminating. Its the rollover spill protection feature that caught my eye.
