    Stockon Excursion

    Hi,

Had a great day at Stockton yesterday, a big thanks to the knowledgeable and friendly trainers, George Websdale and Ron Atherton

In the rangie brigade We had a Classic Vogue SE on Air suspension, my beast and an Evoque Then there were half a dozen Discos of various incarnations.

One of the first things we attempted was a steep dune descent followed by an ascent which was not as easy as it looked. George showed how it was done in his Disco, but getting out took him a few attempts.

After see how tricky it was, only the brave or the foolhardy were willing to attempt it .

Next was the Evouqe and it went very well, got out first attempt, Ron explained that the fact it was light helped, and some pics i took show that the traction control was working very well with sand being thrown from all four wheels.

So i decided to put my hand up and take the toy down, despite being in lowrange second i was a little enthusiastic with my descent, resulting in the skirt on the rear bumper becoming a sand scoop, see attached pic

Rear bar has been added to my wishlist!

My first ascent attempt i got pretty close, so Ron kindly offered to come with me, and at his suggestion, we let the tyres down from 16 to 14 PSI.

This time I gave it the hammer when instructed and with a huge roar, we made it up

Needless to say any steep descents I encountered after that were approached with a little less loud pedal !

The rest of the day was not quite so eventful, though the Evoque did get stuck in some deep ruts but a little shovel work and some tracks and it was out. All in all i thought the Evoque went pretty well, I will post a couple of pics in the Evoque section

The discos all performed well and a grand day was had by all and I met some very nice people

    Steve

PS: I took a lot of pics, so if anyone wants any copies, just let me know

Nice bumper Crack. I did that on mine but with some rocks instead. Trimmed the bottom section and then split it worse. So new bar for me also. Was looking at 2nd hand original bar which appeared around $250 which I thought was quite good. But I'm now looking at the Xrox front bar so will have a rear tube bar manufactured instead I think.

So Stockton dunes is open to driver courses now is it? But probably not to general public just going for a cruise round the dunes? I haven't driven my p38 on there yet. Last time I drive up there, the beach had been closed that morning :-(

So you found the p38 traction control worked ok in the sand? Obviously not as quick responding as the Evoque but still reasonably quick? Mines only been tested on mud and rocks but I have noticed that while it works well, the traction control can take a little to really drive the other wheel that's not in the air.

Great day by the sounds of it mate! Good to see our evoque cousins are not afraid of a bit of a day out!

I have a similar story re the rear bumper, but with mine the crack was on the rh side, so trimming the tapered section (all 3" of it) was enough to prevent it happening again. My crack ain't that big ;-)

I've got a theory on the traction control too Peter (sorry for stealing your thread here Steve), when my brakes and fluid were new I found the traction control to be very effective, now that the pads have worn a bit and the fluid abused, I find it only 'just' does the job.

I'll pop over to the evoque section now for a gander!

    Cheers

Outback Australia are going to be designing a new rear bar to match the XROX front bar. As they are just down the road from me they will be using my P38 as a template once again.

Hmm interesting. How long they thinking till they'll do it? Any rock sliders/sill protectors planned?

Edit: Might add this message to the Xrox bull bar thread to keep this on topic..

    Mate

Just what I am looking for, though my nephew is a fitter and machinist, so I am thinking of enlisting his skills!

    HI

Yes the southern area of Stockton is open to the general public, the RR club has good relations with the Rangers because they do cleanups on Stockton every so often, and the Rangers know that the Landie drivers are very responsible.

The camping area is closed at the moment due to storm damage, check the NPWS website for updates.

To be honest I never really felt the traction control working, Ron's opinion was that it is not a lot of use in sand, it certainly didn't seem to cause any problems, that's for sure.

Talking about cleanups i brought back a large plastic shield which has fallen from under a NissYota and just been left there, apart from the environmental issue, it was also a potentially dangerous object for the 2 wheel brigade.

As expected in such a popular spot there was a lot of rubbish lying around The old "lets go enjoy the environment and trash it"
