Okay, for anyone who is interested, the adr rules on diesel emissions changed in 1995, starting in 1996, but only to Euro 1, they only tightened up enough to kill off the 4BD1T in 2002 when they were reviewed and moved to the newer Euro limits, so despite what people may tell you, the engine can be older than the car as long as the emissions are from the same set of regs.

Only took about half a day to find that out, the government don't seem to want people to know!

Think The Grubbs idea of engine and gearbox onto P38a transfer case will be the most bomb proof solution, now to figure out how to join everything together. Anyone with any ideas please speak up

Yup, an inline 4, which will shake stuff to pieces due to torque peaks less prevelant with 5, 6 or 8 cylinder engines.

What was the economy like on those ones though. A write up in lr international a while back said 11/100km and 14-15 around town. Thought they would've been better than that.

They'd have to be better than that for sure!

    From the P38 brochure.

max speed, 170km/h manual, 162 auto.
    0-100km/h, 14.3s man, 15.8s auto.
    Urban, 12.8l/100 man, 13.9l/100 auto.
Ex urban, 8.9l/100 man, 9.2 auto.

It's an idi engine, so expect about 10-15% less fuel economy than you'd get from a good 2.5 direct injection engine like the TD5.

Now if BMW had a direct injection 6 with a rotary pump that would bolt in, that would be the hot ticket.

Had an email from M&D Engineering in the UK, they can supply everything to fit a 2.8 tgv engine into the P38a for £6395, that is including the engine, all the electrics sorted, intercooler, hoses and every nut bolt and washer, and instructions for all of it, that's connected to the standard auto in the 4.6.

Got to admit, might be seeing what the shipping will be on one of those.

    That's a hideously expensive 300tdi.

300tdi's are great for discos and the like where they are pretty cheap and it just drops in. But there is no way I'd put one in a P38.
The HS28/2.8tgv is just a 300tdi with 300 extra cc's. Ask Uninformed about his one.

If you want to fit a landrover engine, fit a TD5.

I actually have one in my disco, pulls like a train and never given me any trouble, use it as my daily driver, that's what appealed about it, it's a bit more than just a big 300tdi.
