    Thor 4.6 PCV maintenance

    Hi

Just wondering whether or not the PCV system on the thor engine needs maintenance.

It seems to have an oil strainer rather than a PCV valve, so I imagine it needs cleaning occasionally.

    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi

Well i tried to get mine out and it was jammed in so hard that the top layer snapped off

    Reading here

    pcv valve replacement (spiral seperator)

It seems the pipe itself may be just pushed into the rocker cover.

I shall order a new separator (LLJ000010) and when it arrives the fun will be resumed !

The same part is used on Disco 1 & 2 V8`s if anyone is looking for a spare.

I've been having a read on this subject and came across a diagram, thought it might help someone.

Are those clips on the hoses a one time use thing?
Just wondering how to remove the hose without upsetting anything.

    Hi Peter,

    Thanks for the link. Interesting that they say;
Oil separator (integral with breather tube) , yet it seems to be sold as a separate part.

From the description the breather tube is a separate part so the rr.net thread which says it can just be pulled out may well be correct, I shall find out shortly I am sure !

As for the clamps, I found they were not very tight and the tube pulled off easily.

I plan to cut them off and replace them with stainless screw type clamps when I replace the oil separator.

Thanks Steve, I've been having a look for info on those clamps, they appear to be called Clik clips, I found a thread on another forum, if you scroll down you can see how they work:

Seems they are re useable with the right tool.
As you say, if it pulls off without too much drama, it will probably slide back on again.

I also read the plastic oil separator will break very easily, one person mentioned spraying with WD40 and using needle nose pliers, go very gently and wiggle the separator slowly until it starts to move. If you don't rush it, it sounds like it will come out in one piece.
I already have a new separator, but I don't want to have to fish broken bits out if I don't have to.

Prior to getting the heads refurbed and fitting new valve stem seals, there was a significant presence of oil making its way into the throttle body. I had been considering fitting a catch-can. I might later on... there are plenty of DIY designs/instructions on the Net and I've seen stainless steel ones occasionally advertised on "Special" for around $20 from the usual parts places...
